Wade:

Have you tried KK Launcher? Very similar in use to GEL but allows any combination from 2x2 thru 10x10 grid, also lets you scale icon size

My One with 5x5 grid and icons scaled down to 85% of original size provides a real nice usable and uncluttered homescreen. I am confused as to why Google would not bake these two options into their launcher to take advantage of 1080p and phablet sized screens

I go through phases of tinkering with stacks of different launchers, then something about them annoys me and I end up going back to Touchwiz (Of all things). Usually it's the font scaling or the lack of badge counters or the way they break Samsung widgets I like - most launchers don't allow separate font scaling from the rest of the OS, which I have set to 'tiny' to take best advantage of screen size. Currently using Elixer widgets to give me a larger grid within the 4x4 constraints.

Unread count, check
Scalable fonts, check

It's a surprisingly good launcher, worth a try that's for sure, can't comment if it'll break widgets though, the devs are fairly active with regular updates etc

I have tried that one, forgot to mention - keep toggling back & forth between launchers every month or so. Current bugbear is how few allow for text on the dock icons, as that's oddly something I like. Consistent.

Between the little things & the huge potential for dynamic information to be displayed in launchers Google Now-style, I'm thinking I may have to roll my own one of these days.
