What Google claim for new Pixel phones:

  • Automatic OS updates
  • Highest rated smartphone camera ever
  • Unlimited cloud storage for full resolution photo and video (4K!) – exclusive for Pixel users
  • 7 hours use from 15 mins charge

Updates. Expected

Camera. If they're talking about dxo, that means nothing as they're rubbish

Unlimited cloud storage, not that big of a deal

7 hours from 15 minutes. The only decent thing.

All in all, given the prices, massive let down. In fact, pretty dam rubbish.

Please note the small 3 on the charging.....

which says:

Only applies to optimised pixel devices charged using the new included USB-C 18W charger. Battery must be sustantially depleted; charging rate slows as charging progresses.

Personally, I'm wedded to Apple for mobile/desktop and at the moment TV (also have an Amazon FireTV) so not that interested in the phones. Google Home and Google WiFi look kind of cool, though. I also thought the new VR headset looked pretty awesome too along with the content providers they are bringing on board for VR.

Massive disappointment. Sorry Google, but I just don't think your device is worth $1,079

Is the similar-sized iphone worth $1,099?

Yes their top range should have been the $650 (pixel XL 128gig)

All the others should have been around the 400 - 650US price range.  NOT starting at 650.

They are trying to price them like iphones but iphones have been around for years and people know the brand and what to expect. You can't start a new brand and price it so high when people don't know what to expect from it.

Given the HTC 10 - same manufacturer - is currently at $549 US I would've thought a comparable, if not cheaper, option for the Google experience. Perhaps i'm not looking at a comparable phone though, but the main point of difference for me would be the Android experience. Not worth that premium though...

While I don't think I could personally use iOS again (It's like the Fisher Price version of Android in my opinion), I think the price of the iPhone 7 is more justifiable than the Pixel.

There is nothing new about the Pixel that isn't just a minor incremental update. Considering my Nexus 6P cost $799 new, it's $300 more to get the smaller version of the new phone. I think the 6P is too big and I'd like a smaller one, but if you wanted the to go from a 6P to a Pixel XL, you're going from a $799 phone to a $1,269 phone that is a minor update.

What features does the iphone 7 have that make its price more justifiable than the Pixel?

Although I agree that the price is way higher than I'm willing to pay (when I bought the Nexus 5 and the Nexus 6 they were both less than NZD$350), the Nexus 6P had an initial release price in NZ of NZD$1199 (and in fact is still listed at that price by some New Zealand retailers).  Comparing currently discounted prices of old models to a current model release price is hardly fair.

All phones are minor incremental updates, Apple have been the masters of that for a long time. The new Pixel is all part of the Google rebrand and almost relaunch of itself. The reality is there is not much more that phone makers can do for the medium that would be a big step or quantum leap.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

It may just be a case of setting a price point for the future. I understand that the next iteration will be made by Google including custom silicon i.e. they are moving towards Apple territory. This model is built with off the shelf components which I imagine don't cost a whole lot.

Hardly rubbish.

If you take a huge amount of photos as I do unlimited cloud storage at full resolution is a very big thing and is a motivator for me to possibly consider a change in the medium term.

Frustrated that I got an email inviting me to pre-order the Google Home, but after clicking through they refuse to sell me one.

Grrrr.

Didn't want to have to jump through hoops again and pay more shipping than I had to!
