I don't really want an iPad, esp since I have so much investment in Android.

They do seem fairly trouble free though, it's hard to argue. Performance is pretty consistent as well.

Giggs: There were rumours a month or so ago of a new Google Nexus (Pixel?) 7 before Christmas.

Nice to see someone else still using a gen 1 Nexus 7!

I still use mine aswell it still does ok but had to rewind Android 5.1.1 back 4.4.4 as it just sucked balls now it's back to being snappy and great again

Maybe by having phone with such large screens, android tablet makers have decided to leave the market and concentrate on phones?

No I quite agree. I rock a 5" iphone and 8" ipad mini, and even though the phone craps all over the ipad for cpu and storage the ipad is still used for reading, magazines and round the house.

Given it's 3 years old, it's about time to upgrade. Thankfully apple are still upgrading these. At the time I did look at Android ones to compare the ipad against but it didn't make sense for me to jump into another ecosystem.

Interesting time to bump this. I have a 2013 Nexus 7 which has been flawless. I prefer the size and am looking for another one. I have the cellular version and the battery is beginning to drop off. What are the powerful 7 inch Android tablets? Do I just hunt for a new old stock one instead? Has anyone tried to replace the battery?

The big thing I want mine for is gaming. I have found that the Galaxy Tablets have been very poor at things like Clash of Clans and Hay Day, really struggling. I don't play a lot of other stuff but lag on games can be the difference between win and lose etc.

I would just replace the battery, still a great tablet that imo is better than any <$300 one on the market right now. Check and see on ebay if you can get a compatible battery, should be under $30. Theres teardown/replacement guides online

Compared to my iPad 4 and mini 2 it's superior in every aspect. Very sharp retina screen. Flick me a pm. It's basically brand new

My formerly good 2012 Nexus 7 was brought to its knees by the last couple of android updates they pushed out. It's slow, unresponsive and crashes frequently. At some point I will look at flashing it back to one of the earlier versions, which worked much better.

So about 6 weeks ago I got a Samsung Tab A6 from JB HiFi for $428. 10.1" screen with a good picture quality, zippy processor and good sound. Overall, I'm happy with it and it fits the OPs budget and stated preferences.

The only issue is that it only has 16GB of storage. But I dropped $US 39.95 on Amazon, and added a 128GB micro SD card to it which fixed that.

It's a great bit of kit IMO.
