blackjack17:
Samsung s7 edge some where between $560 and $600
Cheers I seriously did consider it, but its not HDR which is a function I need for testing.
When I first looked at the S7 it was $500 on trademe, some dealer, but thats gone, now that was a steal.
kryptonjohn:
I'm interested in phones that are: waterproof (1m), wireless charging, quality low light camera, Android. So S7/S8/S9 fit the bill - any others?
Can I ask waterproof, as in dropped in water or sustained ie snorkelling?
Hope this helps. A few more than your list :-)

Oh id also imagine the LG G7 will be, its due very soon. Will be OLED not LCD like the G6. Pricing Im not sure as it should be cheaper than the v30 but the v30 isnt new hence its price, perhaps $800.

Yep snorkelling but just on the surface nothing deeper than 1 metre.
Thanks for the ref.

No probs. Yep you should be ok. If it busts just say you dropped it in a puddle lol. I have a camera bag, you should consider one, they are a cheap way to get pics/video without compromising your image quality. I think $40, vs like $500 for an Ikelite. I spearfish a lot. In saying that a used action cam is probably the way to go if an often thing you do, due to accessories to make filming better.
I would suggest the V30. My reasons;
HD Audio recording
4k stabilised
Cinelog (so you can adjust the warmth etc afterward to your liking)
Awesome main camera
Very handy wide angle secondary camera
Other things less important to snorkelling videos;
Quad Dac (thats not a small thing, it will blow your mind with good headphones)
Again HD sound recording is so damned useful, the id say its about as good as most 2 channel audio recorders.
SD835, power CPU and GPU, so you can do in Phone editing, games etc
4GB Ram, Id rather have 6 but 4 is the base imo for 2018/19, 30 apps should run fine.
Flat screen no curved edges like the Galaxy, means more grip and personally i find the curved front edges on a phone damn annoying to watch videos on
HDR and 1440p OLED means awesome Movie experience. With Netflix making everything now in HDR and more and mroe movies being released in HDR, its becoming the standard. It makes a bigger difference than 4k imo.
Reasonable battery life.
Separate headphone jack, why companies bundle USBC headphones is beyond me. I can refer you to very high quality headphones in the asian market, dont blow your money on AKG, Senheiser etc, for $50 you are getting $250 quality.
These are the earphones I use, but take a look around the site, there is a high quality piece of audio on a budget for every use case, bass to treble, the site does a very good job of reviewing whats on the market.

I thought the DXO synthetic mobile ranking was limited to 100 haha. Well we now have a new best mobile camera. 4 axis OIS, 2x optical zoom, sd845 SOC, 8GB RAM, 6" 82% b2s ratio. Not sure why they went LCD, battery time perhaps as its 7-8 hours. Similar to what the Nokia 7 is aiming for, but this has much better specs and will cost near the same depending on where you buy, i mean sd845 and 8GB ram and the best mobile cam to date with 2opt zoom, pretty impressive.
I made a mistake, the new Huawei p20 Pro score 109 on DXO. i hope its not fake bokeh that is pumping these marks up. i cant stand it in phones. thats what a camera is for. it looks awful even on the best implementation.

Thats impressive.
3x Leica cams. One 40Mp. One Front facing 24Mp selfie, and one monochrome.
6.1" AMOLED, 1080 x 2244 px resolution (408ppi
4,000mAh; Super Charge
Cant wait for the reviews. Phones just keep on keeping on.
Edit: Not sure what sensor the pro uses for the 40mp, but the P20 uses a sony 378, 60% larger than the Iphone x, which will mean at 12mp great things for low light. Combine Large Pixels, 12Mp, on a larger sensor and you are going to enable great low light capability
Where the Pro drops from 40Mp which is sharp in lots of light but not enough light in, during low light, so it drops to 10Mp, how I dont know. But it is a huge dust of magic.
Cant see these being cheap.
I think it would be a mistake for a person to chose a phone based largely on technical specifications and too much research will simply lead to confusion and disillusionment. Instead, I've always chosen simply on basic features I consider would be adequate to my needs at a price I can stomach if I happen to drop it in the drain on the first day (yet to even break a screen but I'm sure if I shelled out $800 it would). I never spend too much on tech simply because it's so fleeting anyway.
My requirements are primarily focused on portability (not a phablet) with a reasonable camera (for convenience when out and about - if I wanted to try and get amazing shots I'd buy a good DSLR but I just don't) and network compatibility (Band 28 is essential because of my choice of provider and I don't see that changing any time soon and certainly not for the sake of a phone).
The rest of the stuff I see as largely gimmick/bragging value. A phone taking 1 second longer to do something than another just doesn't sway me in the least and given most reviews are purely superficial I largely ignore them.
The reality is you'll never find the perfect phone and, even if you do, you'll probably be starting all over again in 12 months anyway, not because the phone is no good but because there's something in your psyche that just won't let you leave well enough alone.

I don't think I'd ever trust a phone enough to use it for snorkelling. Better to spend a couple of hundred on a waterproof camera

Or $699 at PB tech (NZ prices are for 64GB/4GB/dual SIM version
That's my product haha. X4 is a nice piece of kit albeit a harder sell vs. the likes of Samsung's A8 right now.
TeaLeaf:
This one is actually for me, not test phases of SDLC, but also for testing HDR. The problem is the HDR implementation on LCD (Dolby) is very different to the Amoled hdr10.
For the record the HDR standards don't adhere specifically to the screen tech, OLED just has inherent properties (like functionally infinite contrast) which make it easier. G6 and a handful of other IPS LCD devices are certified for both Dolby Vision and HDR10. Then there's the new VESA standards to consider. Still a bit fragmented and all about the content. V30 almost gets blindingly bright with Netflix HDR.
On a more general note, I feel the best value in the NZ market for flagships purchased outright (ignoring for argument's sake all the fun my team has with increasingly-ludicrous bundle deals for example) is currently offered by OnePlus, Huawei's Mate series, and the V30+. V30+ comes closest to satisfying all of my current desires in a phone with the exception of LDAC and a more intelligent auto camera algorithm, both of which will come with Oreo by the end of next month. But all hardware is as-a-service now and it is difficult to say with certainty that any handset on the market is an ideal choice for users intending to use it as a primary computing device for 24+ months. There is a very compelling argument to be made that two or three midrangers over the same period of time will provide better value overall as well as scratching that new toy itch, assuming the increasingly-small and niche flagship-exclusive featureset isn't mission-critical.

If you could sell the 32GB/3GB version for within 10% of Clove's price I'd buy one tomorrow

Yep I know. But a lot arent meeting the standards in both phones and notebooks. HDR10 1000 nits, which the samsung achieves.
I now know how some phones and especially laptops are getting certification. HDR10 for example, 1000 nits is not a standard, its something to aim for. Colour gamut though is non negotiable.
But what I dont get is say the G6, its Dolby Vision compliant according to netflix not hdr10. Dolby vision is 4000 nits to aim for. Clearly the G6 gets nowhere near that.
Dolby hasnt really nailed things down yet though, so meh, but here is a generic guide.
HDR10 supports up to 4,000 nits peak brightness, with a current 1,000 nit peak brightness target, 10-bit color depth and capable of displaying everything in the Rec.2020 color space.
Dolby Vision, on the other hand, supports up to 10,000 nits peak brightness, with a current 4,000 nit peak brightness target, 12-bit color depth and capable of displaying everything in the Rec.2020 color space.
Personally flagship wise I think the V30 is the best bang for buck.
LG got it spot on with this model. It lost the dual screen and replaceable battery but gained ip68.
Considering what it can do multimedia wise there isnt a phone that comes close to comparing.
Sure the main camera isnt THE best available, but we are splitting maybe 5% better here etc. A lot of camera photos come down to the software inside the camera. I believe you can use the Pixel HDR+ HDK on the v30 if wanted.
Camera wise what is really important are 2 things, it shoots RAW files for light room adjustment later (does it have an exposure bracket mode for HDR, id assume so, in camera HDR always sucks), and secondly it has LOG files for modifying your video colour gradients etc in post process.
So personally I find the whole which camera is best is futile if they dont have those 2 things, because a camera with those 2 things is as good as any other camera generally. That new P20 changes things a little.
Ive been over media consumption, oled 1440p hdr, quad dac, you just arent going to find better imo. Also an FM radio, thats a rarity, I just wish flappn Radio Sport wasnt in AM in Auckland ! whats with that.
Its coming down to the v30 and the note 8 for me. both septemeber release phones. both for different reasons. although the 8 wont be AS good for multimedia its no slouch, but its Note software is what grabs me. if i was in an office job again as a PM or SA id definitely be carrying one.
On the x4 topic, GSM arena have given the moto 3.7/5

I found this interesting about the v30 basically being the only decent phone for recording HDR content, admittedly and 30fps 4k. The cinelog is just so great. The put it up against the 50k camera and there wasnt that much in it. 10bit colour goes a long way.
The one thing Id like to see on the V40 is 960fps in 1080 like the Sonys, and now Samsung doing an apple making out they have come up with something new rofl.
The v30 is nearly the bees knees for video, prob best on market, but id love to throw in 960fps amongst that gorgeous HDR cinelog video.
