Nokia has come back to me and confirmed both Nokia 6.1 and Nokia 7 Plus are compatible with Project Treble.

 

I am currently in Sydney, back in Wellington around midnight. I am told the Nokia 7 Plus should be there when I get home - in which case I shall list the Nokia 6.1 and Nokia 7 Plus giveaway tomorrow evening.

Looking forward to reading what you think of the 7 Plus; I’m looking out for a new phone for my wife, and we’d decided on the Nokia 8, but the 7+ now has me interested, especially given its use of Android One and being Treble-compatible (longevity and regular updates are important).

Was disappointed to read, however, that the “feel” of the 7+ In the hand sounds similar to the 6, which is just so sharp-edged and uncomfortable, and this will be more obvious in a large phone. Sirocco will cost too much so not an option, so may well still be getting the 8 for her - at least it already has 8.1 and is on the list to get P... So I’ll be particularly interested in your thoughts of the 7+ vs the 8.

Is the 7 plus model that Spark provides dual SIM? i.e. the SD card slot is a hybrid that can also take a second SIM?

Expect for the Launcher on the Nokia 7 Plus, it's a very capable device. I've been using it now for about ten days (a bit before launch), replacing the OnePlus 5T. The OnePlus is better in speed, screen (AMOLED) and memory (6GB vs 4GB) but it comes with a higher price. For the range it sits in the Nokia 7 Plus is really good. And Android One!

Anyone got a different variant than TA-1055 (what Spark provides) - do you have trouble in receiving security updates in New Zealand? (i.e. with NZ sim's card)

Probably unrelated to Nokia 7, but I had (and may be still have) issues with getting updates on Nokia 6 Dual SIM 1st gen with any NZ carrier.

What Launcher are you using? I've found the Z launcher to be very good.

I can recommend the Nokia Z launcher. It learns which apps you have used most recently and serves them up as the apps on the home page. To select an app not shown just start writing the app name on the screen with your finger or swipe from the right to display all the apps alphabetically then scroll down the screen to find what you want.

It's also clever enough to know when you are in another location where your app preferences may be different and it serves up the apps you most often use in that location.

For example I use my N1 as an electronic flight bag and use a remote GPS receiver when I'm flying. When there's no WiFi reception it assumes I'm in the aircraft and it serves up the GPS Bluetooth app as a favourite. Very nifty.

The Nokia 6.1 is on a similar level of performance (Antutu 90488) as the new moto g6 plus (Antutu 90203). The main difference is the Motorola model has double the memory (32GB vs 64GB).

 

The Nokia 7 Plus (Antutu 142051) is halfway between the Nokia 6.1 and the OnePlus 5T (209175) in terms of performance.
