so with this sending pictures etc would be free right, using data vs old school mms messages?

ive been using facebook messenger mostly due to pictures just working, and knowing it wont cost me anything else.  Sending a pxt to a iphone user from android never worked for me.

Looks like you’re right. I have never previously sent MMSs as I’m too stingy to pay more than my monthly charge! I’ve just tried sending a photo to my wife using Google Messages and it was sent (states MMS underneath). Now that is definitely a useful feature...

Just enabled it on my Xiaomi phone using Skinny SIM. Can't find anyone to send it to, all my existing messages threads show 'Text' and none show 'Chat'. Doesn't look like many people have enabled it.

yup, its pretty much like imessage/whatsapp.   i have a couple mates who are on capped data still and miss images sent via SMS, so RCS is handy if they are on wifi at least

Works fine. I use it with my girlfriend now shes got a new phone.  I think it requires data at both ends to be on to send via it and when your txting or whatever normal sms's are light blue and the new ones are dark blue.  You do have the option to send a particular message via normal sms if they havent received it.

But yeah I think messenger is still more useful.  Oh and the vid chatting is via Duo which is very cut down compared to pretty much any other voice services.

Oh and I couldnt get it to enable on my gfs old Redmi Note 4 which I think is Android 6 from memory but her new Note 8 no issues at all.

The problem there being it requires a pact with the Facebook Devil, something I’m not willing to go back to... Yep, Google ain’t no saint but still have to draw a line somewhere.

I refrain from sending MMS. For a photo I always send a link to Google Photos. They charge too much for MMS. I don't know but I wonder if RCS uses data rather than the cellular network to send rich content.

I’d be very surprised if it wasn’t using data to send photos, given if it was the cellular network then the provider would want a cut of the action; as I’m clearly not paying a cent to send images via RCS that also suggests this is the case...

I got the notification from VF and turned it on (Pixel 4XL). My son also got it on Vodafone (Pixel 3) but when he turns it on, it never is enabled. Strange but I have nobody else to test with.

Seems to work well so far, some phones were updated, some werent.
On a Note 10 there was no prompt, yet it was available in settings to enable. A P30 had a prompt to do it and a Note 20 shows its still unavailable.
Finally the default messenger is catching up......

It clearly doesn't use the SMS infrastructure. I enabled Chat on a phone which is on 2D and has no money in it so it cannot send SMS. Yet when it's on WiFi it can send and receive RCS traffic.
