the original question was
Any advice from people who have made the switch?
lxsw20:What Android phones from 2016 are still getting software updates?
Am i reading that wrong or is it Android 8 still? If so at least it's getting security updates still, which is a good start.
I think the OPs question was answered on the first page. Since they are talking about upgrading from a 6, I think its worth discussing the TCO and extended support of a phone. Others seem to disagree, fair enough.
I have run both. I ran iPhone up to 7 then switched to Galaxy, Note, LG and Sony Android phones before heading back to iPhone at the 11 Pro Max point.
My experience is that it is doable and relatively simple if you do things like copy your contacts from Apple's Contacts app into Gmail so that they appear. Apple calendars were more tricky and never quite seemed to work - but then I have never managed to make ANY calendar on a computer or phone work flawlessly.
I do not know if OP uses Mac computers - but if he does, then my advice would be do not change to Android. The loss of simple functionality is a PITA. The loss of iMessage was also a real downer for me.
In short it can be done and mostly works fine. You'll find bumps in the road depending on your specific use case and the other stuff you use it with, but they can generally be overcome or worked round.
If Google sold the Pixel phones here, then that would be more tempting to me because of their Android support but I would not buy one without NZ warranty. If the Z Fold 3 is as interesting as has been suggested, that might tempt me too but mainly for the hardware.

Advice for OP is literally use any phone's switch software or use Google's I've switched from an iPhone XR to a Oneplus 8 and I almost had everything(except my messages).
Installing Google Drive on the iPhone ALSO means you can sync contacts, photos, videos and music onto the cloud (at the very least you can do contacts to google drive) so when you log into your google account on your new Android device you have your contacts ready to go.
There's no complete cover everything.
