After seeing reference to it in a NexusOne post I realised I never set up the messagecenter number for vfnz. My txting works fine, but I was afraid it might be dialling them to the default UK number. Turns out there was no number set up, but I have updated it anyway to be safe and my txts still work afterwards. Instructions if you want to set yours up too:
From the phone dialpad type *#*#4636#*#*
Open Phone Information
Scroll down to SMSC and enter +6421600600
Then press update. (Nothing significant happens to indicate success).
Like I said it doesn't seem to matter if you don't (Maybe it gets assigned when you set up the APN? But there you have the instructions anyway just in case.

Yes, 2.0.1 is being released to Milestone imports, as I have just gotten mine. I must say though, it took ages for Motorola to prepare a patch. The Droid 2.0.1 has been out in the states for months and months (and months). They are almost on 2.1 from what I hear in recent rumblings.
Anyway the patch came via system updates (settings -> about phone -> system updates. It checks itself every 30 days, but I happened to force mine manually) and I downloaded it by following just a couple of prompts on the phone. After it rebooted I had the new unlock screen and everything was as normal.
Changes I have noticed immediately: * Unlock screen is different (horizontal slide instead of curved) * Unlock screen now has time, clock, and date on the screen itself. Which is good, except the lock screen times out after about 5 seconds and I'm not sure how to change it (I tried screen timeout to 10 mins, but no impact on the unlock screen). * Control panel (widget for desktop) is skinned differently * Google calendar is different colour and I think now shows today's events, instead of the next days upcoming events (thank god). Might need to test a bit more though to be sure. * App panel slides open much faster * Google Maps has pinch zoom now (yay) * Media Gallery is smoother (I used to get some lag here) and has a kind of 'snake' thing going on instead of coverflow style. A bit weird, but not bad.
Now before I go on to the next part, I want to say that I do truly love this phone :) It's been so great to be connected, I totally love the keyboard now, and overall my experiences have been good.
However a few problems I have been having that I was hoping 2.0.1 would fix are... * Battery life. I know that Palm managed to release a patch for Pre that reduced battery consumption so I hope Motorola can be as skilled. The Milestone devours battery. During a normal day I will use up a charge completely. When I take a 2 hour bus trip though and decide to watch half a video (with wi-fi and gps turned off for the most part) and surf a couple of web pages, it goes from 100% to 40% easy. * Wifi will very occasionally slide off and go over to HSPA. Dammit, it just did it now while I was typing this :( Oh, it just found it again though pretty quick without my prompting. :) * Freezes when opening the phone, especially the browser. Only about 7% of the time, but annoying. Must wait 10-15 seconds for the 'force close or wait' option, then just choose wait and continue like normal. * Some lag when scrolling through coverflow in media library.
I'm not sure if any of these issues are supposed to be resolved by 2.0.1, but looking promising so far. Irony is though, I just did a hard reset about 40minutes before I got the 2.0.1 update, so I'm not sure which is accounting for the lag improvement. I haven't put about half my apps back on yet.
Anyway, there you go. Expansys imported phones get their updates the same time as UK. Download over Wi-Fi or HSPA (at your cost). Installs itself. Marketplace works normally and I can buy all sorts of apps if I want (other countries like Norway are apparently getting blocked). Just don't expect fast updates from Motorola if this example has been anything to go by.
Oh yeah, that's the other thing, MikeyPl's query about gmail push. Basically it's great! I thought at first it wasn't instant when I first used it. But I have learned that push email servers like gmail and blackberry aren't 'polling' every second. They check around every 15-16 mins, then if you have received a mail recently it is checking every few seconds. Since I got my first few emails through when I got the phone I haven't had to wait at all. Gmail has been great, and in a few cases I get the alerts on my phone a few seconds before they arrive at my desktop.
So yeah, if you go that way Mikey I'm sure you won't be dissapointed. Maybe just the battery to consider if you are a real road warrior. But a backup battery or car charger is probably standard equipment in that kind of role anyway.
