I've found that switching from wifi to 3G will almost always cause apps to be downloaded immediately. The apps are usually small enough I don't care. Then i switch back to wifi.

Android pay apps, yes most are small but copilot has (Ichiu7 size of maps?) 100mb? don't know of maps data, most of that being Australia which I don't need. This will eat my 100mb month limit in one go.

How to check if there is a menu option to limit downloads to wifi with 3G VF card in.

Now this button does what? whoops!

About 18MB for NZ maps and about 100MB for Aussie ones. I tried to download them using their desktop application but that crashed with a  .NET error!  So I did it on my phone using my home wifi connection. I know that was using the wifi since it was fast and my data balance was unchanged.

Staying in Wellington. Check out my AirBnB in the Wellington CBD.  https://www.airbnb.co.nz/h/wellycbd  PM me and mention GZ to get a 15% discount and no AirBnB charges.

twobikes: Wifi works usually, though perhaps not when it's night in the US and they are running backups (our evening) and perhaps not during periods of peak demand (will move with the sun across Europe and US). I tend to think of thoese as evening times everywhere....and then imagine how many in each time zone....some not many...others (UK, DE, US) many more. I don't know this for certain....but it's a model that seems to help me work out when wifi will work reliably...and when it won't. Wifi definitely works for large parts of any given day.....and seems to not work about about the same time(s) each day. Maybe VF is just trying to drive 3G data use.....(dunno...)

How do you check your data balance on the Nexus, or do you do it online via Vodafone web site?

This probably only works if you have a data plan but I just call 777 and it tells me how much of my 100MB I have used so far

I found out that the problem with my N1 not downloading Market apps on wifi was my firewall was blocking TCP port 5228 which it uses for downloads.  All good now.

Look for an app called Netcounter.

My 2 cents..

Battery is fantastic, accidentally turned it on when unboxing so just usb and wall charged it all night while playing music on my SkullCandy headphones :D. I leave it charging all night and it will last the whole next day easily. 20 minutes of video recording, about 15 minutes of youtube, 30 min of music - while driving. using GPS, wifi, gps, and 3g all on while at uni all day and when I got home it was 48% charged.

Can someone tell me how to disable the 3G with apndroid? Also theres no simcard application to check how much credit I have remaining or make a hotlink topup :-/

Video playback was epic laggy until a did a soft reset

Voice to text works best in Google Search, not so much in texting because conversations are more unpredictable than search key words.

Google Goggles doesn't work very well, couldn't find anything it could recognise - tried windows XP logo, a mobile phone with vodafone logo, and a few other things, some worked. noticeably was that a clear handwriting of 'hello' was interpreted as a completely different word. :S

Also is there a way to hack the navigation to work? And where is google voice?

To answer your questions.

You can tell the N1 only to use 2G networks Settings/Wireless and network settings/Mobile Networks

Google Voice in installed by default but I upgraded to the latest one. It's just called Voice in the application screens. It's not that useful since if you use it it always calls a US number from which it routes the call to your intended destination passing along the CLID of your GV number. And from my experiences, it calls the US number is standard US format (ac)-nnn-nnnn which VF don't understand anyway.

I guess an interesting combination might be to use Sipdroid to make a SIP call (using a US SIP provider) and then the number would be valid but it seems just too much hard work.

I have good luck with voice recognition and often use it when sending SMS since it's faster than typing for me.

Voice recognition for SMS is not an option so far, I said "well I dont think so" and got "wellesly sex". the second attempt gave "allied oceanside" !!
Can you set it to an english rather than american accent?

Try regional settings
I can't seem to find Google Voice in my applications list, can't open it from market either. It's a running process on boot but I killed it, maybe that's why.. So I guess navigation can't be hacked anymore? Also as soon as I unchecked 'only use 2g networks' my reception has been dropping and an alert pops up in the notification bar every now and then. maybe im just paranoid

Dont have Google Voice in my apps list either. My 3g reception is fine, just the same as on my Hero. This is a speedy phone but I would like to see the speech work better and of course Navigation :-)

Speech works fine for me most of the time if I don't tax it with Kiwi words. Navigation using Google Maps is okay but I do like Copilotlive which cost $88 (NZ).

I do have GV but as I noted, it's not much use here. Perhaps it won't show if you don't have a GV account since it's linked to your Google account?
