ummm, the HTC Droid Incredible is a CDMA radio not UMTS, so no will not work in XT but on the old network.

Don't give anyone hopes. If it's a CDMA handset it cannot be used in NeEw Zealand, unless released by Telecom - which won't happen anymore.

Android 1.5..... Yakk!! Why is that?? It's still one of the most primitive android os. What is telecomnz doing?? Will telecom nz update the os to 2.1 in the future??? I doubt it.

Different vendors update Android in different ways. HTC phones sold through telcos tend to get OTA updates, while phones bought directly have the option of downloaded updates from HTC's web site. Acer only do downloaded updates and their process worked very well. In fact you can flash a variety of genuine Acer ROMs on the same phone using their tools. Maybe LG will deliver updates directly in a similar manner. It may depend on the level of Telecom NZ customization....if any. But I agree. Android v1.5 is a poor first showing given kit was superceded 8 months ago. I suspect it willbe updated soon.

I went to Albany Mall today and paid a visit to the Telecom NZ store.

They had a new LG GW620f there. The sales guy was pretty keen about it. Said he really liked it.

I had a wee play with it. The phone feels really nice in your hand. The sliding keyboard has keys with a good, solid feel to them. The screen is a little on the small side after using a nexus one for several weeks.

Overall, the phone feels like an HTC Magic, but with a sliding, physical QWERTY keyboard. It's loaded with Android v1.5, but the sales guy said it was very likely going to be updated soon. That isn't the same as a firm commitment, but I made the point that with phones like this, the vendor's commitment to ensuring it stayed up to date was as important as the phone itself.

Then I showed him the Nexus One.....and he liked that, too.

But the LG GW620f looks like a great phone for someone on Telecom, new to Android, and on a budget.

Got it here today. So far quite impressed with speed. Will start sync to Microsoft BPOS soon...

Ok, first thing I don't like. It comes with Moxier for synchronisation. But it all goes into Moxier apps. And it's not integrated with the dialer. So if you open the Phone app and tap on Contacts... It's empty.

Not funny.

Android v1.5 is the one version that has compatibility issues, hence my own harsh comments about this phone when it was first announced. That version of Android was superceded 9 months ago...and no one should be releasing phones with obselete software. That isn't fragmentation. It's bad planning by the phone vendor (and telco). However! There is supposedly an upgrade for this phone in the not-distant future. Other manufacturers are releasing product schedules, so people know when to expect what. For phones like these, this is an important marketing consideration: being transparent about upgrade plans. Lack of transparency may hurt the product as no one wants to risk buying an orphaned phone.

Which apps?

How did they fail?

If they just didn't download / flow......Did you try starting Google Talk?

Very curious. :-) Thanks for the updates so far. I had a wee play with one at the Telecom store in Albany on Saturday.

Tried downloading five different apps from Marketplace. Both over WiFi and 3G and all those ten attempts failed. I know my Google Account is working because I got my Gmail synchronised ok.

Yes, that what I mean for market fragmentation. Got this handset for review, only have one week with it. You know what is going to be my impression in one week if it is not "just work" like iPhone or Windows Mobile.

There just isn't any excuse for releasing on v1.5 - has to be 1.6 at least.

And either have great Active Sync support or none at all and say it isn't for Business customers.

I suspect there isn't a clear idea of who this device is for - idea being to just chuck any old Android into market 'cause it seems to be getting popular overseas. Hmmm...
