Lambchop: the main reason why i ended up getting a desire instead of the x10 was the lack of pinch zoom, which wont be added with any 2.1 update as it's a hardware issue ..the screen sony use is a generation behind the one in the desire.

mind you the desire's mutlitouch has flaws once you start trying to do anying other than pinch zoom, the incredible has the next screen tech up from that also ..

but yeh no pich zoom combined with dodgy touch responce issues put me right off after being the biggest x10 fanboy on here.

And this is why I get annoyed at people ripping on about the iPhone being a piece of crap...it appears to have a nice multitouch capability to me.

Considering all the discussion around the pros and cons of the X10 from a specifications perspective its the most attractive Android phone available to the consumer market in new zealand... combined with a free psp, great plans, and a planned software update arriving in Q4 bringing Android 2.1 , HD video recording and , DLNA capability amongst other improvements...  im sold :) Nice work vodafone i say..

Certainly its the best Android handset being offered, hopefully they will bring some more soon though...

2.1 in Q4 ain't that pretty though, since by then so many other handsets will be packing 2.2 (which has a number of extremely big improvements).

To be honest the improvements provided by 2.1 or 2.2 arnt really that significant from my own usage perspective... and well certainly not enough to wait for the possible launch of another handset from Voda or telecom running Android 2.1 off the shelf.. anyway im sure the X10 will provide enough amusement over the next few months until the android 2.1 update arrives :) why wait i say..

Visionnz: a planned software update arriving in Q4 bringing Android 2.1

The thing that concerns me is whether this will be dependent on Vodafone/Telecom. My Telecom-supplied SE phone is running 3 updates behind, and apparently this is because Telecom hasn't approved any newer updates. I'd hate to see all NZ Xperias stuck on Android 1.6 due to the local operators not approving 2.1.

Why wait for Vodafone or Telecom to launch one, thats what I say... get it parallel now and spend less money...

I keep seeing people saying 2.1/2.2 won't matter for them, but even if Flash 10.1, WiFi Tether, OS operating speed improvements, apps to SD, upgraded BT stack, 16M colour display, and much more mean nothing to you, the battery life improvements sure will (the X10 has poor battery life).

When have you been using 2.2?

The JIT improvement itself makes 2.2 a fairly bit deal. Some of the other rumored functionality such as wifi/usb tethering & xvid/divx playback also also a fairly big deal to many.

The difference between 1.x and 2.1 however is not terribly significant, mostly just backend support, some apps won't run on a <2.x firmware. There's some speed improvements and a few minor new features here & there, not sure what they thought warranted a jump to 2.0 rather than 1.7 though.

2.0 changes rundown vs 1.x: http://developer.android.com/sdk/android-2.0-highlights.html

Dont get me wrong I can understand the benefits of Android 2.0, 2.1, or 2.2,  just dont really see why it would stop me from purchasing the X10.. with the android 2.1 update coming so soon (Hopefully with no hold ups from Vodafone or telecoms side :).. quite simply.. What other option is available for an android device in New Zealand, with Manufacturers Warranty and Support (Hence no importing), Reduced cost as a result of contract options ( Offsetting cost savings of Importing) and well hardware specifications exceeding almost any handset available on either telecom or Vodafone Networks,

I guess the key point is Ive waited this long for a quality android device here in new Zealand for quite some time.. and finally we have one... simple really...

I picked up a X10 a couple of weeks ago. Compared to my cheap 6 year old phone it's a bit of a stunner.

Only reason I went for it over the Desire is I wanted a decent camera, so I wouldn't have to buy a P&S camera as well.

Lovin my X10 so far and  to be honest cant really fault it :) although was almost tempted by those android 2.1 devices  available on vodafone (if thier was one) hmmm and yes i even asjked myself if I should haven taken up one of those parrallel imported offers that seem to be the common theme of some of the posts here..

I guess what im saying is take the time to enjoy the fact we finally have a great android device available on the new zealand market with all the benefits of official network and manufacturer support... and  well thiers always a gonna be xda developers... and well hardware wise from my understanding in some respects the X10 still has the edge on the htc desire..
