dobrien7: Got my phone now, really liking it. Am on 2degrees and right out of the box it doesn't want to surf web saying doesn't have data network connection?

How do you go about the flashing, setting up?

Are you using a Spica or something else?

I flashed mine using NPS at work on XP, but on Win7, you can use Odin 4.1(works on 64bit too) after installing NPS to get the drivers

Then you can either get the official firmware from samsung-firmwares.com  which is fine, I liked the Samsung firmware, but it's missing a few 2.1 features like Live Wallpapesr

So I am now using SamdroidMod Kitchen v1.0.3  which is great :) much much faster than the official firmware and also supports 3G tethering, you can put flash lite on it and the live wallpapers are excellent :)

http://forum.samdroid.net/f28/samdroidmod-v-1-0-3-lk2-03-3-root-more-05-06-2010-en-782/

This guide while it sounds difficult is actually really easy, to summarise it:

- Download the latest official Samsung firmware 2.1 for our region
- Flash it using ODIN
- Restart phone
- Flash LK2.02 mod onto the phone
- restart phone and check everything works
- Put the samdroidmod zip file into the base directory of the SD card
- turn phone off, remove battery, put battery back in, press Volume Down, start call and end call
- Enter recovery and select update any ZIP from SD
- Wait a few minutes, it'll restart and might go blank
- You should see a Google Nexus type animation(cross that sort of spins in different colours into itself)
- You'll be greeted with a new screen :)

Just bear in mind, you will lose most data, back your contacts upto your SIM first and make sure you have your Gmail account synced.  Then when you resync in the new system, all your apps shoudl download after first visiting the app store

Oh yeah, you'll need to setup the APNs too:

- Settings
- Wireless and Networks
- Mobile Networks
- Access Point Names

It will show a black screen, hit the menu button on the left of the D-Pad,  then you can start inputting the APNS from the 2deg link above

Do you think there will be a samdroid release of 2.2?

Ok I've got Samdroid 1.0.3, so I need to get firmware 2.1, ODIN, LK2.02 and then follow your instructions? How do you put contacts onto sim? Have synced my gmail. New to smartphones so excuse my lack of knowledge :)

Contacts on sim is as easy as opening your contacts menu, then pressing Menu, then Copy Contacts to SIM, or copy Contacts to Phone

I originally did it on my old phone before selling it and getting this one, also Android allows you to copy Contacts to SD, so you can save a vcf file to your PC and use your contacts in Outlook or just keep a backup copy of them

--- Oh and for above about Samdroid 2.2 ---

They are working on it, btu the current release is highly unstable

Hopefully Samsung will do it, seeing that MyTouch just announced all their previous old phones are going to 2.2 from 1.5/1.6

Holy crap, this might not mean too much, but the official Samsung Firmware is testing Froyo 2.2 on the i5700 :S

Hopefully this is right, because it was only two weeks ago when they wrote on their twitter:
"Too Old for firmware" which is a complete lie

but now:

@SamsungFirmware You mean testing '2.2 upgrade' for i5700?

They are either testing the drivers for Froyo in order to give them to Samdroid or another forum to use in Froyo, or actually making a Froyo version to release soon. I just really hope it's the latter...will keep following their twitter page,

Another person wrote this however:
Good news is that samsung is testing andriod2.2(froyo) for Spica i5700 by the end of this month . If the hardware and software works great together they will update. bad news is no new android versions for galaxy i7500.

So I guess that means if it doesn't work out, the update won't be released, it's hopeful though

All

I'm considering a i5700 too for myself and my wife

Does it support what is called persistant reminder i.e. if a SMS arrives will it persistantly beep etc until it is acknowledged ?

If not is there an Android download of some sort to acheive the same

This is a feature we desire as it is especially handy when one isn't with ones hanset all the time

Froyo is rumoured to be coming to I5700 and people are also trying to get Leshak from Samdroid to port it also.
