oxnsox: What sort of battery life you getting LL??
If it worked for 90mins it'd be an easy way to read the paper in bed at the weekend....

Battery life is 2 to 3 hours. Closer to 2 if you have the brightness up higher (50%-60% or higher) in a brightly lit place and closer to 3 (or more) if you can turn down the brightness to about 15%-20%. I had mine on for over 3 hours night before last, sitting on the couch surfing the Net via wifi...playing YouTube videos of Maru the cat....with the screen down fairly low.

There is a video of a mod that tells you how to alter the battery setup to get 8 hours of life. I haven't seen it yet. It involves opening the thing up and putting a new battery in it.

Battery life doesnt sound too bad then does it?
I'm still very tempted to buy one.... The mrs cant see how useful it would be :-)

There is always going to be the "if it just had a bigger battery, what about a more powerful processor, if the screen was a bit bigger, what about 3g etc etc" - But at <$150 it currently a pretty good little package. It is a pity though these days that devices dont have user changeable batteries though - just having a second charged up battery is a real simple solution to battery life....

That hacked one looks like a real brick - guess the owner is proud of his "Frankeneken"

Just don't tell her ;-)

The battery life seems pretty acceptable really.

Reading the forums at Slatedroid, it looks like build quality and components vary a fair bit. So experience of these devices may not be consistent from one device to the next.  For example, the early M001's (apparently) had a badly laid-out internal wifi antenna that sees some people experiencing more limited wifi range than in later versions of the same model.

Well, an update from me.. I gave up on Dealextreme and have just cancelled my order.. now waiting for a refund.

Bought this one here, off trademe which I believe is the Eken model.

http://www.trademe.co.nz/Computers/Laptops/Laptops/Other/auction-303514237.htm

So now I await it's arrival.

Disappointed in Dealextreme to say the least since they are not providing shipping times/delay information other than 'waiting for supplier'. The still have their one able to be ordered too.. Shocking. Anyway... Now I wait for this trademe unit to arrive.

That's the same one I have.

Here follows a wee bit of dump of my findings over the past few weeks since I got mine.

There are several custom firmwares for it as well as one official update to v1.7.4. They can be downloaded from slatedroid.com.

I upgraded to the official one, then tried Slatedroid v1.3. Slatedroid has a nicer app launcher, but the YouTube is broken on install and you have add a file they forgot to include in the package. :-)

I then tried Ecotox v1.1.1 (with the home set to "Home++" - one of the alternate Home apps available for Android).

My vote is for Ecotox. It feels quite lean and the whole thing works faster. It's also rooted and supposedly supports swapping, which may be why the thing feels like it has more memory......

But to get apps installed on it you really need access to an Android phone. I use AppMonster Pro to back the apps up on the phone, then email them to a gmail mailbox I set up for the M001. If you access gmail via the browser, you're able to download attachments (like APKs). You use the browser because the Gmail app doesn't handle none-multimedia attachments.

The Android Market app isn't completely useless....It's just a major pain to get it to work properly due to the number of steps you have to through to get it to - maybe - download any apps you selected. I find it easier to just get the app off the phone.

Updating/replacing the system is ridiculously easy. It takes about 2 minutes.

My M002 arrived from DealExtreme on Monday, which was about a 10 day turnaround.

I'm pretty happy with the device so far considering the expectations I had for it.

I'm sticking to the official 1.7.4 firmware for now as nobody has managed to download the official 1.7.4 for the M002

Happy to help if you'll learn how to use the link button so links you post are clickable. :-)

No worries. :-)

Yeah, that's an M001. Check out my post on ECOTOX v1.1.1 and enabling swap. Still a slowish cheap device but much cbetter than on the stock firmware.

Absolutely make sure you calibrate the touch panel asap. That makes the device much more usable too. Apparently the screens are actually designed to be used with a stylus. I've been practicing two-handed typing using two halves of a broken knitting needle. Sounds silly but it seems to work quite well! :-)

My Eken, via Trademe arrived this morning.. Nice looking device.  I'm charging it up at the moment.

I gather it takes a standard SD card?  Any idea of any SD card size limitations?

Tempted to update software tonight but should probably 'test' it first :)  lol. Don't want to void the 'warranty' I have...

;)

I purchased the same unit from this trader over the weekend and am waiting for it to arrive.   Would be interested in any feedback once you have had a chance to play with it.

NOTE: I really goofed on this one I forgot the biggest update I wanted to post that the box and listing says 2 GB but the damned thing is 1GB so BEWARE

Ive been playing with mine for a day or two now and I honestly wish this thing had at least 256 memory honestly and hen I gto to go back to the main home page screen it delays and sometimes gives an error stating that the home app is hanging but i always hit wait and it comes up within seconds........Scrolling sucks but hey, what can you expect for a buck and a quarter?? And  it got here within 2 days from ordering..So I cannot complain much...I hope upgrading the OS to 1.7.4 as has been suggested by other users  will make it better otherwise its going to craigslist or my daughter..Buy one with more memory and/or power but at least more memory if you are considering this its not worth the price when there are others out there just a little bit more expensive.
