My (Google-sourced) Nexus One (Telecom XT flavour) is updating OTA to Android v2.3.3 as I type this.

I took some pics of the beginning.

Nope. There is no Google Voice on the phone. I don't recall if it was there or not.....

But I can see Google Voice in the Market...so I could just download and install it.

My Google sourced XT N1 has voice on it but as my Google account doesn't have voice activated with it I can't log into any Voice services. Will just have to cross my fingers that they might release Voice in NZ at some point but at this rate i'm not going to hold my breath.

My Nexus S came with Google Voice, but I can't get it to work in NZ.

No upgrade to 2.3.3 yet. It upgraded to 2.3.2 from within NZ no problem, so I don't know why this one is delayed.

I tried doing a 'check-in' but nothing happens.

But I can see Google Voice in the Market...so I could just download and install it.

I had Google Voice installed with Froyo which I used all the time when I was travelling in the US. With Gingerbread manual update, it disappeared, but in a strange way. It shows up as installed in the App Manager but you can't remove it (all greyed out). Also the Market shows it as being installed.

In the end I had to locate a apk file for it that somebody on the google help forums uploaded (they extracted the file from a Desire).

I can install Google Voice, but can't enable it. It needs carrier support, right - as it replaces your carriers voicemail service (either that, or you would have to pay $$ to redirect your calls to the US)?

Voice search and that sort of stuff works, but I'm thinking that isn't part of Google voice?

Google Voice works a couple of ways.

You get a GV number which is yours. But you can't actually (easily) sign up for a GV number unless you are in the US or user a anonymous proxy server(but Google isn't as tough as checking as say Hulu). Outside the US you also need to have a US number that can ring a local phone (so a SIP phone I guess). This is because GV calls the number you want calls to be forwarded to and asks you to enter a verification code.

You then tell GV what to do with inbound calls to your GV number. The typical action is to direct the call to another number. And you can take different options on forwarding based on a number of things, like time of day, who called etc. All I did was tell GV to forward the call to my prepaid cellphone number when I was travelling over there. So the next time I travel over to the US and say get a different prepaid number, all I do is change the forwarding to this new number and people still call my GV number.

I also have a phone number from sipgate.com and access that using Sipdroid on my Nexus One though with the new GV you don't need Sipdroid since GV now supports SIP phones. I have my GV number forwarded to my sipgate number at the moment so if somebody were to ring my GV number, if I were on wifi on my N1, the phone would ring.

You also make calls using GV though I am not entirely sure how that works. With GV installed you tell the dialer to always use GV to make the call (US only). I think GV calls some number in its network and then routes the call to your calling party. It's not a free call - you pay for airtime as you always do when using a cellphone in the US but the caller sees as your CLID, your GV number, not the number of your cellphone.

Voicemails get stored on the Google servers and in your VM inbox. GV not only allows you to listen to the VM (over the Internet of course) but provides a text transcription of the message which is surprisingly accurate.

I also used GV to call NZ while I was over there. That cost me cellular airtime (which wasn't an issue since I had 1500 minutes for a month) and then 2c(US)/minute for the call itself. That is about the same as Skype I think but has the advantage of not requiring Internet access on the phone.

There is a theory that GV is no longer available for users who are outside the US since the service isn't available outside the US but I have seen postings on Google's help forum who are US users and have lost GV. So it's a bit random.

So what are your guys thoughts on Gingerbread after using it for a few days?

I've noticed a huge improvement. Even though there's not a lot of stuff changed on paper for this release, the phone seems so much snappier.

Making and receiving calls has improved a lot. I always found it quite laggy before, when a call came in the call screen would lag and stall. Now it appears instantly. Ending a call is the same.

Switching applications just seems smoother.

And of course the screen off animation is awesome.

From my point of view, I am liking mainly but I am annoyed about GV being lost and I find I drop the 3G network every now and then (2D) which requires a search to get it back and every now and then a reboot.

Plus a reboot also removes GV so I have to reinstall it again.
