If you have a mate/relation in Oz or happen to be going there then you can get a Nexus S for under $400NZ as Vodafone are selling them for AU$299 and they are NOT locked despite what you'll be told and the big red sticker on the box says.
Out of all the phones suggested this is the one I'd go for as it'll have Ice Cream Sandwich before Xmas, none of the others will have a hope.

$269 with the 10% online order discount, makes it around $350 NZ. Which happens to make it half the price of the VFNZ pricing.
If you have any friends or family in Aus you can send it to, do it. Really great find langers, I have some family over there atm and im tempted
Also does locking refer to the APNs being locked or just the radio basebands?
The handsets are marked as being locked as in Sim locked but I can guarantee they arent as I've got one (plus none of the Nexus phones are locked anyway). They're $299 in store in case you have issues buying online
With any phone that indicates it will be upgraded be pessimistic. If it doesn't have what you want now, don't hold any hope it will come later. I have an LG Android, a Nokia Symbian^3 and HTC WP7, all of which I have waited for features that have never come, even after upgrades, i.e. just because you get an upgrade, it doesn't mean all features of the upgrade are going to be available for your handset.

Also, will the phone have any Vodafone branding if I buy it from Noel Leeming? Would rather avoid this if possible - I'm a 2degrees subscriber.

When phones are sold as 'Vodafone' (or other telcos) phones they usually have a splash screen from that telco - so would be pretty sure that you will see the vodafone logo - Unless you are prepared to root the phone and fiddle about your best bet would be just to ignore the big red splash.
FYI - rooting is gaining access to the bowels of the OS and being able to fiddle/tweak settings. Depending on the phone this *can* be quite a trivial/easy thing to do compared to installing a completely different ROM. Have a really good google and read as much as you can before attempting though.....
I bought a parallel imported SGA and it has a pretty green GLOBUL (Bulgarian telco) startup logo. It got me to start with as it was displaying bulgarian text when I turned it on - but I worked out how to set the language to english and all good now.
You should just be able to go to the 2degrees website and send the settings to your phone - just open the message that comes and it sets your network settings for you.
As for OS version??? Check what the samsung website says it comes with - it should be at least that version.
Upgrades are a pain as they come via the telco you are connected to and I think they also check the telco identifier in the installed OS. ie *If* vodafone NZ decided to push out the latest OS to that model phone you would hook your phone up via usb to your PC where you had the samsung kies program installed. I think it checks the OS (vodafone NZ version), checks that Vodafone has an upgrade available for it and I think it checks that the SIM is vodafone NZ as well (anyone please correct me if I am wrong). If all those things are ok then you will get an upgrade. Taht said the kiew program seems a bit flaky apparently.
If you have a vodafone SIM you may be able to get the upgrade at some point - I would assume you could just pop that back in the phone for updating purposes.....
2 degrees dont sell the SGS do they? In which case they probably wont make an upgrade available. But the existing provider code on the phone (in the OS) wouldnt match and you wouldnt get the upgrade.
If that phone has gingerbread (2.3) though you probably dont need to worry too much about upgrades - its pretty stable.
