I'm considering one of these tablets as an alternative to lugging the netbook with me. I was wondering if anyone had any more thoughts about how this compares to other Tegra 2 tablets on the market? E.G. web browsing speed, media playback, battery life? There doesn't seem to be a lot of information out there.

Also, I went into the 2Degrees store in Botany and the sales guy told me that none of the stores had a working tablet, so all I could look at was the dummy model. The sales guy definitely wasn't very helpful which put me off. Do any of the other 2Degrees stores have a functional model?

USB works fine on my laptop but not my desktop for some reason and that discharging bug didnt pop up again.

One thing I noticed is that turning plug ins under the browser to on demand instead of always on made a huge different in scrolling smoothness on the MediaPad on some heavier websites.

As for media playback its handled MP4 720p youtube fine, need to go and find some real H.264 720p stuff though. Screen quality is good and speakers sound pretty nice as well

Battery life is pretty decent, depending what youre doing you can get a good 4 hours screen on time but havent had it long enough to make full judgments just yet

Havent had enough time with Tegra 2 tablets to make any proper comparison though.

What are you going to use it for in replacement of the netbook? Productivity would be easier/better on a 10 inch screen but consumption so far has been fine on this

Thanks for your reply. I would be using it mainly to browse the web and watch video as well as a time waster when I'm on the morning commute. My Galaxy S is alright to browse the web but doesn't handle desktop sites that well and the battery life is starting to get pretty average.

In that case the MediaPad should be one of your primary options tbh, scrolling has actually been surprisingly smooth and video has been fine during testing so far (MP4 only atm)

It is a good $200 cheaper than other 3G tablets as well, unless you want to tether your Galaxy for the sake of keeping one data connection

+1 for good review.

It's a really good review for me if I get to the end of it and don't find myself thinking "Yeah, but what about ..." This review ticks that box.

I had a fondle of the dummy huawei in Lynnmall yesterday, fits nice in the hand and has a solid quality feel to it, ICS upgrade promised too which is good. I'm seriously considering something liek this or the VF Smart Tab as a incar pseudo carpc (Andcar app - worth a google ;) ) once i get past Xmas, 7" is so pocketable but looks so usable

Will be interesting to see a showdown between the 2D and VF offerings, specwise at least they are both winners

Yeah, I had a play with the Huawei at lunch-time.

It is cool. I would be holding it in both hands mostly.

The only negative for me is the high cost of mobile data. I can't see myself using 3G that much.

Hardware looks like it rocks.

Just noticed this today:

Huawei’s MediaPad Now Comes with Android 4.0

Huawei also unveils new MediaPad color series, operating on Android 3.2

Huawei, a leading global information and communications technology (ICT) solutions provider, today announced that the Huawei MediaPad is now one of the world’s first tablets to come pre-loaded with the new Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system. First launched in June 2011, the original MediaPad was the world’s first 7-inch Android 3.2 tablet. This latest version of the MediaPad once again provides users with the very latest Android experience, along with access to the newest and hottest services and apps available in the Android marketplace.

Huawei also unveiled its new MediaPad color series – fashionable MediaPads in three new colors: shadow black, classic brown, and passion pink and running on Android 3.2. Both MediaPad versions have a high-quality display, with screen resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels at 217 PPI and supporting 1080P Full HD video playback. Additionally, they come with a Qualcomm dual-core 1.2 GHz processor and have a battery capacity of six hours or more.

“In a tablet market defined by staid black and white tablets, the new colorful MediaPad offers a personalized look without the need for an external case,” said Richard Yu, Chairman, Huawei Device. “With a hardware package that includes a high-quality screen, a powerful dual-core processor, and long battery life, these colorful MediaPad embodies a rare combination of style and performance.”

Huawei’s new MediaPad color series and the MediaPad with Android 4.0 will be available in selected markets in the first quarter of 2012. Existing MediaPad owners will receive an OTA Android 4.0 upgrade to their tablets by the first quarter of 2012.

For anyone that is interested, Huawei has released a new Firmware on their site. It isn't available as OTA at this point it seems, but for anyone that is keen, the rom is relatively easy to install manually. You just need a microSD card.

ROM 301u_FIRMWARE_adroid3.2_C232B016_General_VersionForUser_05010SJR below

Results so far for me personally is that the scrolling speed/responsiveness of the tablet in general has improved and the benchmarking scores have improved a bit. Not exactly scientific I know.
