Hey, I'm not sure this is the correct place to post, please redirect me if not.

My HTC Desire arrived today, purchased through eking.co.nz.  It's a beautiful piece of hardware, everything I'd expected and more, however it spontaneously rebooted a couple of times when I was playing with it initially.

I put this down to not having a SIM in, but putting one in didn't stop the reboots, and they became more and more frequent until it just went into a continuous cycle of reboots.

After leaving the battery out for an hour or two, it started up again fine, only to begin the same thing after about 20 minutes' use.  The reboots seem to become more frequent the longer it's switched on.

I managed to do a factory reset this time, which has also made no difference.

A bit of searching shows up a few others around the world with a similar problem, and a couple of them seem to have had this fixed by sending their phones back to HTC, where the ROM was reflashed.  No hardware replacement required.

With this in mind, I turned up the following Modaco post:

detailing how to flash a Desire back to stock ROM (which is essentially what I want to do).  The current ROM is a UC (Unicom China?) one, with some software I don't really want.

Does this seem like a reasonable course of action for me to take?  Has anyone else experienced a similar problem?

1.  I don't want to be without the phone for weeks and weeks
2.  I'm going to be flashing the ROM at some point anyway, to get rid of the Chinese software I don't want
3.  I've heard rumours that eking.co.nz (who I bought it through) aren't the best when it comes to returns/repairs/warranty claims

I've now done the ROM flash, to the HTC Generic ROM.  It went successfully, and gave me a 100% working phone . . . until it had been switched on for a couple of hours, at which point it did a spontaneous reboot, and went back into its reboot loop again.

With this in mind, does anybody have any experience of dealing with eking.co.nz for this kind of thing?

How about directly with HTC?  Is this even possible?

Beautiful piece of hardware, but this is an incredibly frustrating problem to have, straight out of the box.

Any advice will be gratefully received.

Could it be a faulty battery that's causing the roots? You say the probability increases depending on how long the phone has been left on right? Maybe the battery gets hot over time and cuts out? Hence the random restarts?

Just a stab in the dark :)

Yeah, this is a possibility - any ideas how I could test this (other than borrowing a known good battery from someone else)?

I've now sent an email to HTC via their website, will see what comes of this.

As this is a grey import, is anyone aware of any problems this may cause in the warranty claim procedure?

I'd call it an out of box failure, and it should go back to wherever you purchased it. Politely request a replacement. You don't have to waste time finding the fault.

Yes, I just noticed that email too.  I think I will get one as the Zagg isn't smooth enough for my liking.  Especially noticeable when using Swype.
I got another free zagg anyhow, so can always go back to that, but i'm hoping that the Phantom will be like they say it is, and as good as a naked screen to touch!

You (or anyone else for that matter) want one (which is actually a two pack) too?  If we get a few shipped together should be able save on shipping (which i've been told is 'about $3-4' (US)).

Count me in please - I still got my zagg unopened after reading more reviews and should have waited for phantom skinz. Also didn't want to be without phone for 24 - 48hrs for zagg shield to bond...
... so yes count me in on a phantom skinz please... PM me for details..

The Nokia cable I have works just as well as the HTC original for data (thankfully). Actually I've only been using the Nokia cable for data as the HTC cable is heavier duty so it's been in the car for charging. I'll probably buy another HTC original if I order anything else from Clove. I think they're around £6

The Nokia cable I have works just as well as the HTC original for data (thankfully). I grabbed an extra data cable from PBtech.co.nz seems to work perfectly fine.
