What an interesting app. My dear old S6 was born in Vietnam on 2015.03.30, 859 discharge cycles and battery health 89.84% !!!

amanzi:

tanivula: I just got a pleasant notification of a software update which came with the July security patches. I was going to say, what the, a security patch the same month, then realised it was August. But for Samsung, that's pretty good, especially for a 2 yr old device eh.

Interesting - my S7 is still on the April security update. I'm on the Vodafone Oreo firmware.

I'm on BTU (UK unlocked CSC) though it originally was a Vodafone NZ sourced S7 in the beginning. As mentioned several times in this thread BTU and XSA seem to be get updates faster (XSA not so much these days).

I got a Galaxy S7 which was parallel imported, it's CSC is PHN (i think that's a dutch one?). It already has the Oreo update, is there any benefit (or negatives) to me flashing BTU or an NZ firmware? Less battery drain potentially? Any drawbacks?

There can be advantages of having the CSC that aligns with your operator because:

  • has been tested by them
  • unlocks features (best example is 2degrees wifi calling)
  • may have lower standby drain (cell standby - cant remember the right terminology but there was something voda vs spark which is different)
  • may/should perform better in general

The only possible drawback is slower updates

So there's not even a drawback in terms of potentially screwing up your device in the process (I see you have to use Odin) or in it leaving some permanent 'mark' on the phone (similar to when you root, or trip Knox) that could prevent you returning the phone or something?

I was on Skinny. Though I'm currently in Peru for a while. Battery drain is quite bad and I'm wondering if flashing a new csc will help or if the bad battery drain is due to my supposedly new phone showing a "discharge cycle count" of 463 out of the box and a battery health of 80%

That can't be a new phone

That would be the natural conclusion, though it looked totally new, had proper screen protector on it, sealed box too. Though my paranoia did lead me to find out there are counterfeit box seats available....

If you want to flash without losing your data follow the instructions here and have a read in the comments for a couple of changes as the versions of Android have changed. I have done it several times and not lost a thing.

My S7 Edge also only just (over the weekend) received the 1 July Security update.

People often mistake me for an adult because of my age.

Keep calm, and carry on posting.

I've got the s7 flat. But it's because I'm running the BTU firmware (UK unlocked version). I bought my s7 from Vodafone NZ but have generally had xsa or BTU as the updates are more frequent than the NZ carriers.

Speaking of which, September security update in September! Kudos Samsung.

If you're still sporting a Samsung Galaxy S7 *congratulations* they're great phones!

The good news on the street is that the S7/S7E are still in line for quarterly security updates for this year via the official channel. See https://security.samsungmobile.com/workScope.smsb

The bad news is they're stuck on Oreo via the official update channel (i.e. OTA etc.) See https://www.xda-developers.com/samsung-galaxy-s8-note-8-android-pie-one-ui-update-roadmap/

However some refreshing news is that if you have a Exynos version of this phone, Android Pie is now available via ported official software, from none other but the Note7 Fan Edition! So it's good news if you'd like to have the latest Pie with Samsung One UI and a fully working camera.

At this point there are two Developers working on Ported NFE ROMs. Both still in beta but from my testing, both working fine, ok for a daily driver. Check out BlackDiamond or TeamExykings on XDA if that's your thing.

If you like vanilla AOSP Pie with a crippled camera then that has been available for some time now.
