sdavisnz: Australia started getting pie 13/01/19
Correct, but it was the "unlocked" Note 9 - XSA CSC - the carrier variants only started getting it yesterday, this is reflective of the sammobile firmware details too it seems.

Looks like we are not getting it in January... Here I am, frantically pressing the "check for updates" button. You can cut the tension with a knife. This is almost worse than waiting for the release. ARE WE THERE YET! I WANT AN ICE CREAM!
That's so 2011, stop living in the past man...... The kids now are all about dat pie
You joke, but I may or may not have a daily routine of doing the manual check for updates.
I swear I'm not sitting in agonizing suspense waiting for it, it has just become more like a "roll-the-dice" mini-game for me at this point haha.
I just flashed the firmware so I could start using it 2 weeks ago..
Bugger waiting.. get into it..

Guess your post initiated to flash yesterday night, bugger waiting.
Issues around whatsapp backup restore though... can't work out how to fix this yet.
I havent had an android device since the Note 4. The Note 9 did catch my attention but I have been weary of the update schedule from Samsung. From looking at the current trends, it doesnt seem like much has changed in terms of getting updates coming to your not an year old phone.
Would users here, based on their current experience with the Samsung updates, shortlist a Samsung device as their next device? Specifically the Note 10 when it comes out?

Thing people don't undersand is that Samsung don't need to update like everyone else does, they already have so many of the features already baked in. They have most of the features (sometimes years) before any other OEM does. They keep up with the security updates, that's sufficient enough/
^Security updates. I am not sure what's happened but my Note 9's last security update patch is dated 1 November. They seem to have forgotten about updates since.

If updates are your priority, it will probably never be a Samsung device. Google or Android One devices will always be a winner there.
I bought my Note 9 after a line of Nexuses (4/5/5x) and I would definitely consider another Samsung device. I also have a retired Samsung Tab 4 7.0 and hated TouchWiz on that. So much bloat and just not intuitive to use. But after using Samsung Experience, honestly I don't really want to go back to vanilla Android. It feels like so much more of a mature and complete product than vanilla ever did. And One UI seems to be shaping up to be even better.
My experience with updates on the Nexuses was: get buggy x.0.0 release that added a few new features that I mostly didn't use, but tanked battery life -> struggle with that for a couple of months -> release x.1.0 that fixes the issues.
If longer wait times for OS updates is the price, I am happy for Samsung to keep that bad-boy in the oven for a little longer than others. Security updates have been pretty good (up until now, they seem to have paused on 1st Nov while they roll out Pie/One), pretty much bang on a month after general release.

After upgrading the Android 9 on my note 9..
I think out of all the phones I've had.. this is far superior..
Picture quality on bang on for me.. Battery lasts ages..
I think there's room for improvement.. but I'd recommend the note9.. 10.. well we'll have to see what that is..
In screen fingerprint sensor is the only shortfall for me..
