I'm not saying buy one now, but I reckon if you give it a few years at the rate things are improving it will be cheaper, safer, more fuel efficient, better looking - and most importantly... more full of geek tech than many other cars on the market.

There was an article a couple of years back on one of the TV doco programs about the Chinese government being concerned about China getting a reputation for producing junk. The official line was they wanted to be known for quality. But then they havent stopped the tsunami of knock-offs - so I dont know how serious they are....

Its true of course that many companies have their products built in China and provided they have good quality control of assembly and components the products will be as good as if they were built anywhere. So China certainly *can* produce quality goods.

But there does seem to be a pretty big element of producing cheap nasty stuff that gives them a bad reputation and just makes money.

I suspect there is no shame as making money at all costs in China (true capitalism in action I suppose - Oh the irony!). I know that in Japan and Korea it would seem shameful to knowingly bring the company/country into shame.

Their cars will get better very quickly....

Just look at what Huawei are doing in the mobile space. Telecom commented that they are 'a year or more' ahead of everyone else in the game as a reason for their selection as an LTE equipment provider.

Great to hear that you are enjoying your Zopo phone, I have received my Zopo ZP810h one month ago and I absolutely love it. I have been using Chinese smartphones since last year and I can say they are improving a lot.
MediaTek, the chinese manufacturer of SoC who makes the all-in-one CPUs that are used to make these good value phones has made lots of efforts to create products that are powerful enough to start to compete with big brands like Qualcomm, only at a fraction of the price...

My previous phone was also based on the MTK6577 dual core CPU, I was waiting for the new phones using the latest QuadCore processors from MTK. I have not been disappointed!

I have bought the international version of the ZP810h (with IMEI numbers starting with 35 instead of 86) with the following specifications:

ZOPO ZP810h

- 8.0MP back, 2.0MP front camera, with LED flashlight
- Wifi (b,g,n) Bluetooth (4.0), A-GPS
- 5.0 inch multi-touch HD (720x1280) IPS screen
- MT6589 Quad-core CPU
- Android 4.2.1 Jelly Bean
- Dual SIM card dual standby
- Front LED for notifications
- Compass, gravity, light and proximity sensors
- Support 3G WCDMA (HSDPA) network (tested on 2Degrees: 6004kbps/1767kbps)

The HD screen is really impressive, not Gorilla glass, but at this price you can't expect everything...
The battery is rated at 2800mAh which is good (I don't know if this is true as I always take these specifications with a grain of salt) but my battery last at least 3 days with moderate usage and always connected. The phone is very snappy and never gets hot even when pushed to its limits.

Regarding the 4Gb ROM, in fact you need to get a microSD, but with a 32Gb C10 you don't have any issue of space any more as most of your applications can be installed in the SD card storage.

I have paid less than 3 times the price of a Samsung Galaxy phone, is it 3 times worse? I don't think so. It all depends what you expect for a phone and how much you are prepared to pay.

Interesting! Lately I was looking through several options as a backup phone (Android) as my iPhone 5 is unable to last even 8 hours through the day. Actually there are quite a few options out there for me. I looked at ZTE, Huawei and ZOPO. I finally picked the newly released ZTE Grand Memo model

I chose this over Huawei's gigantic 6.1" Mate as the Grand Memo has got a better processor (Qualcomm APQ8064). I bought it at a special online promotional price of around NZD450.

Zopo is also a decent phone as well; I myself would have picked the new ZP950 (about US$55 more than ZP900 but much upgraded specs as well)

I'm happy owner of Chinese phone for almost a year now. and it's kick ars phone Meizu MX :)

I would never buy big brands phone ever. Screw their 30-50% marketing mark-up on retail price of the product.

Hi maxzzz, I've got my fingers crossed for its arrival, probably another 10days time.

However I do need to point out the specs listed on ZTE's English site are meant for the US/European market, where ZTE will launch a LTE version of the phone packing Snapdragon 800 with LTE, as far as I understand.

The model currently being sold in China is not LTE compatible. It uses a Snapdragon S4 Pro (8064) chip with 1.5GHz Quad Core CPU, not 1.7GHz.

What's quite cool (and refreshing) is that you really can do your research and choose wisely. There are so many manufacturers out there, that if you spend some time you can narrow your choices down to those who are obviously striving for reputability, quality, customer service, etc.

...and this goes pretty much for anything - not just phones and electronics. Case in point is that I just built a wood fired pizza oven, for which I required ceramic fibre insulation blanket of a certain specification. The Australian or US products were very expensive, whereas the Chinese products were much, much cheaper. At the end of the day, it's just ceramic fibre...and seeing as many refractory services companies here in NZ were using it, I figured I'd go with the Chinese product. It works perfectly: the inside of my oven is 500 degrees C and the outside is ambient (insulation thickness = 75mm).

Yes, this new model really looks good but I am wondering how it is performing because it is still the same MTK6589 quadcore processor but this time having to manage twice the resolution compared to 720*1280 phones that were out there. Some tests show that it is a little bit slower, but maybe this is due to the ROM which is not really optimised yet.
In addition, it is not quad-band for the GSM reception (2G) so it may not be the best if you are a flying frequently to the US or some Latin America countries (especially outside main cities), it is perfectly fine for the rest of the world.

If someone buys it, please write a review!
