That works only if the telco supports it and in a different way from this service.

Signed up two weeks ago. Now at 245 and have done nothing to improve place.

Think you are right, but asking people to spam their friends to get a spot is not a good way to go around and get people to sign up.
Plus saying "first 1000" when it does not even seem to work like that (as you can be moved down the list by others) is just an outright lie on their part.

A bit like how they would close it off at 1000 yet it's still running.

A bit off topic but recently I got an email about a new product where if I got in top ten most people who referred friends you could get a free product. Posted the link on Reddit and am currently no. 9 with about 24 hours to go before it finishes so I might get a free one.

Still heard nothing, but it doesn't take much to improve your ranking. I was about 67th, but have just signed up my wife using my referral link. This took me up to 38th. (My wife is 1152, so I don't hold out much hope for her)
