problem with galaxy is the bloatware and very slow updates. any OEM is slow but samsung and LG are known for being the slow of the slow.
the galaxy S7 is actually a good buy i think at around mid $500.
if HDR is unimportant, i think the mate 10 is hard to beat.
they are all so similarly priced you really do get what you pay for. the note 8 is the only galaxy that runs HDR on netflix even if the other 2 say they are hdr 10 compliant. $1200 is a lot for a phone, but clearly its a lot more than just a phone.
a lot of competing products being released this month with Nokia adding value in updates and security with google one as well.
Just as an FYI for other people I helped my Mother in law update here phone ended up getting the Meizu M6 Note NZ Edition from PB tech this has all the NZ 4G frequencies with a Snapdragon 625 and a great camera for the price. The phone felt fast and with Android 7.1.2 its reasonably up-to date.
At a minimum, buy a decent-sized tablet. Better still, watch the movie on a proper screen.

What are you on about, yes seriously, more important than on any other device hence why they are being rolled out on more mobiles than notebooks. More people watch streaming media on their phone than anywhere else.
Where else do you suggest HDR gets rolled out?
I dont know how good a videographer o photographer you are but if you are even a beginner and know anything about Dynamic Range you will know its all about white light.
10000 nits = the sun, the whitest source of light.
So you have Dolby Vision and HDR10, HDR10 sets 1000 nits as a guide, simply because its freaking hard to achieve on LCD and darn near impossible on anything outside a mobile phone.
The best HDR experience on a Notebook is the Thinkpad X1 panels, yoga and carbon at 500 nits and full RGB and by that I mean every RGB.
The Reason very few (a handful) of desktop monitors are HDR compliant is because of a very low nits/cdm. 300 is good 400 is great, but that doesnt take into account gamut.
So you then look into OLED which has a huge advantage for HDR, the Note 8 is 1000 nits, you add to that a a 1440p+ panel and a very wide colour gamut and you have a sensational media platform.
Outside that you have the AlienWare 13 OLED which is also 1440p and the best gaming panel on the market (for games that make use of its speed and HDR), let alone its media consumption experience.
So YES Im serious, what is your point?
Most people I know go to bed watch something and fall asleep, Im doing that on a 6.3" screen not 60", a little impractical me thinks.
