When you use Speech, are you holding the phone in the normal manner or away from your mouth as for texting etc? Also I wonder if a noisy background trips it up?
I had thought of getting CoPilot but it doesnt speak street names :-( although I dont know if Navigation does either.

I'm supposed to respect my elders, but it's getting harder and harder for me to find one now.

I hold it like a microphone - that also helps with the noise cancelling microphone on the back of the phone. And while I haven't had a lot of experience with GPS devices (the last one I used was a Tom Tom in the US) they didn't speak street names. But who can read street signs anyway - I would prefer to know when to turn and in what direction.

BTW I found a link to a site that tells you how to put your own voice (or your loved one's) voice in Copilotlive if you want to have a more familiar voice telling where to go!

I am quite sure that if i was to get CoPilot, Google would announce Nav for the rest of the world the next day :-)
Some more thoughts on the phone....

It feels solid
Screen is good in sunlight, not perfect but better than my Hero
Its fast
Experimenting with the Swype keyboard, amazing!
BT file transfer to PC seems still not to work
No setup needed to get it running on Voda, out of the box and it just worked.
I love the cloud :-)

I'm supposed to respect my elders, but it's getting harder and harder for me to find one now.

peejayw, is Swype available from the market place? It looks like a cool app, but they say it is not user downloadable at this time.

I dont think its a finished app yet, what I have is a beta but its amazingly accurate.

I'm supposed to respect my elders, but it's getting harder and harder for me to find one now.

That would be annoying but it would be interesting to know how much data is required to support Nav and what would you do when you were stuck in the middle of the NI somewhere where VF coverage was non existent!

At least with Copilotlive the maps are on the device and it's usually easy enough to get a GPS lock anywhere.

Not sure how much data is required - I'll probably get it installed soon and report back, but I did read somewhere that once the course has been plotted, it downloads the required maps in advance - so even if you go out of coverage area you'll still have navigation, so long as it has time to download it all. Could cause a problem if you need to recalculate the route out of the coverage area though, I think.

I would be interested if you can actually get it to work here to see how much data is required since from I understand and my personal experiences, Nav is locked outside the US. It worked for me when I got the phone in the US but now all it says is calculating route and then no route available.

There doesn't seem to be much around about it on the N1 yet, but I've read in a few places that Brut.all's updated hack still works: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=583123 (see the last few pages of posts). In any case, I'm very keen to get this working on mine.

You'll have to root your Nexus One and install the hacked maps to get Nav working in NZ right now.

Cyanogen is almost there with a ROM for Nexus One. His ROM would be a great alternative to the stock ROM...but probably worth waiting for the wrinkles to shake out.

Otherwise, if you're not in a rush, the directions provided in Maps 3.3.1 are very good and they show your car's current location as you go (IIRC)......you just don't get the turn-by-turn nav instructions. You have to look at the map or read the instructions. No problem if you have a passenger who can read.

Nokia's move to provide global Nav on their smartphones should force Google's hand there. We may find we get turn-by-turn Nav in the near future.

Jamesyb0i: My understanding is that Android (incl the Nexus One) does a lot of processing in the cloud. Stuff like voice commands / entry and Google Goggles can't / don't won't work if they don't have fast enough access to the servers in the cloud that actually do the processing.

Here's an experience -
Dropping the nexus one, from chest height onto concrete pavement while trying to jump touch a neon sign... =_=. Well now I've got a scratch on the body and its no longer new! Luckily its only cosmetic damage I guess. .
