Also found that it doesn't have the Comodo Cert Authority installed. It complained when I tried to login on Geekzone (we now use SSL on login).

freitasm: Tried downloading five different apps from Marketplace. Both over WiFi and 3G and all those ten attempts failed. I know my Google Account is working because I got my Gmail synchronised ok.

Yes, that what I mean for market fragmentation. Got this handset for review, only have one week with it. You know what is going to be my impression in one week if it is not "just work" like iPhone or Windows Mobile.

A fair comparison would be trying to run current iPhone apps on a phone running iPhone OS v2.x.

They wouldn't "just work" either.

I can accept that an uncharitable interpretation of "fragmentation" is phone vendors and telcos making mistakes and releasing old software as though it is new.

But I'm not happy blaming Google, Android or the app writers for that. It's down to LG and Telecom NZ in my book.

It's like blaming WCDMA as a whole for Telecom XT's network falling over. The platform can't take the blame for mistakes by people deploying it.

Interesting. Was the network available at the time? many foce close conditions are due to an app expecting a response and not getting it. If "Wait" was an option, then more than half the time using it first sees the problem resolve itself when the network returns / responds. It may also be due to a txt or phone call coming in at the same time as you're doing whatever....and the timing is upset.

This is most often seen on old android versions. The newer versions (v1.6 and later) are more robust and responsive.

Try an HTC Magic with v1.6 on it and compare to the LG. The much older HTC Magic will trash the LG phone just because the OS is better, newer faster......since August last year.

I am not blaming Google, Android or the app writers. I am not blaming the platform. You guys are playing like Apple Defenders do.

Step back and think again. Most of the handsets will be distributed through operators. Operators will interfere. Manufacturers won't update handset software. If Apple doesn't promise updates (which will happen from OS 4.0) and they only have three models you can imagine other manufacturers won't do it. They won't do it because they are in a race to always release the "biggest" "fastest".

John Doe will buy a "Google Phone" even if it's not directly marketed or signed by Google. Remeber how Vodafone sold the HTC Magic here? "HTC Magic with Google".

John Doe will buy those handsets, and mainstream consumers won't go around updating their phones. They won't go around rooting their phones, because that's what geeks do, not consumers.

So my point stands. There is nothing anywhere saying this handset will be updated. And don't be fooled by the idea that consumers will happily hack a new OS version onto the phone. They won't.

I want an alternative to Windows Mobile that is not the iPhone. Really want to be Android. But the way I see it, the entire ecosystem is doomed. I am using that word again: fragmentation.

Day 2... For some odd reason, after turning the phone off and leaving it charging overnight, today I managed to actually download and install applications.

Downloaded Facebook, Seesmic and Foursquare.

Contrary to your believe all those applications worked with no problems. So it's obviusly not a problem with version compatibility (as you seem to imply) but really the Market application being dumb on the first time.

Touchscreen is quite responsive to touch and precise. The keyboard is very good and the size is great. Now that apps are installed, the only real problem seem to be the fact the Moxier synchronises to its own, non-standard Email, Calendar and Contacts. This means that even though I have all my contacts synchronised t the handset nothing shows up in the dialer, incoming calls don't show anything but numbers and the Messaging application doesn't lookup contact information.

If this is indeed how it works, I can see people getting a bit frustrated if they synchronise to the smartphone and still "don't get things".

Any suggestion for a third party sync app that sync correctly to the default Android applications?

Moxier email doesn't automatically hyperlink URLs in email - there goes my Geekzone management over email (in Windows Mobile URLs are automatically changed to links so I can easily manage Geekzone from emails I receive in a special folder).

Liking the keyboard a lot. The size is very good.

Got the Sony Ericsson X10 today. A LOT BIGGER but the screen is really nice. The model I got is 900/2100MHz WCDMA so I am using a 2degress SIM card in it.

maurico i'd be interested to know a few things if you still have the phone, re gps and ptx settings i guess.

what are the xt apn settings on the thing? if you could print out every setting that would be awesome.

and not sure how you'd access the follwoing but i'd be keen to compare the phones gps settings to that of the desire sold in aussie, for eg on that phone ...the following found via using astro filemanager:

In Astra hit "Home" to put you in the root of the SD card. Then "Up" to switch to internal memory and select System/etc/ and tap on the file called "gps" and select File Editor to open and view it. Full name is "gps.conf"

hmm maybe try that nz timing server in the NTP_SERVER setting, though i'm not sure those google servers will let the LG get access .. hmm

mind you these settings are not directly editable on the desire it's self, have to jump through a few wee hoops 1st. not sure how the LG works re that.

If it was possible to list the entire contents of any APN/s in the LG's Wireless Networks menu (if indeed there is more information) then it'd be greatly appreciated.
(Incl. any MMS LSMMSC address etc)
