With the hardware it has, couldn;t you flash a custom rom to the X10 to make it everything the desire is and more?

No, because it isn't Rooted yet. Its proving the most difficult phone to Root ever also, so Root may well be a long way off. Even then custom ROMs may prove difficult as Sony's implementation of Android is markedly different to anything else out to date.

If and when Root happens we'll see, but for the present time its just not as good a handset (camera aside).

By the time the X10 gets 2.1 the Desire will have 2.2, and 2.3 will be well on the way also, so the via official channels things don't look great for the X10 either...

I have been contacted by First Mobile earlier today to let us know they still have these in the channel:

When customers purchase a new Sony Ericsson Xperia X10i on selected on account plans, they could get a free Sony PSP worth $329.95. All they need to do is get their new X10i on a selected on account plan, be one of the first 300 Vodafone customers to register their details online and we'll send them out a Sony PSP with their new Sony Xperia X10i handset, easy as that. Offer available while promotional stocks last or until 30 June 2010. To qualify for the offer, connection must be on eligible plan. There are no preloaded games on the PSP. Vodafone can withdraw, extend or amend this offer at any time.

Go to www.firstmobile.co.nz for more information

A friend of mine just picked up one from JB HiFi as an insurance replacement. I have a N1 with Android 2.2 and it was quite a difference using this versus the N1. I see that 2.1 is due out for it in 4Q2010 so it might be a while before 2.2 gets to it. That being nice it's nice hardware, good camera (which you would expect from SE) and nice feel.

I seem to recall Google did ask SE to build the N1 for them and they refused. Maybe they should have tried harder!

Staying in Wellington. Check out my AirBnB in the Wellington CBD.  https://www.airbnb.co.nz/h/wellycbd  PM me and mention GZ to get a 15% discount and no AirBnB charges.
