So much changes in so little time....

Since my original post I too noted Motorola's end-of-life notification for the Droid/Milestone1. Then there was Motorola's non-commital to Android 2.2 upgrades on the device family. And then I discovered that the Milestone has implemented the signed bootloader (the original Droid didn't) making it a lot more difficult to modify.

After that I found an obscure piece in a NZ article online, where a Telecom spokesperson indicated that Milestone updates in NZ would *not* be available OTA (indicating to me that Telecom intend to modify the build and control updates themselves). That was the end of it for me...

Last week I ordered an XT compatible Nexus One from MobiCity. It arrived on Monday, and I'm loving it too :).

I showed my Nexus to a workmate yesterday morning, and by lunchtime he was down at the Vodafone store buying one :).

Incidentally, in case anyone didn't know, Vodafone are now selling Nexus Ones from their outlets at $999 outright, with the usual reduced prices for contracts. (they snuck that one in with no fanfare whatsoever!)

Can your workmate (or anyone else with a Vodafone Nexus One) confirm:

a) whether there is any physical Vodafone branding on the phone, and
b) whether Vodafone have installed their own custom ROM, and if so what does that bring which stock 2.2 doesn't have?

Andrew and I have just done a side by side between my XT compatible N1 (ex MobiCity) and his Vodafone one.

There is no Vodafone branding anywhere on his device or packaging. Also there is no Vodafone branding in the software on the phone, and no 'Vodafone' apps evident.

Comparison of system info shows no difference whatsoever, same kernel, same Android version and build, same everything. The baseband version is different (I would imagine that's the XT/Voda difference).

Obviously all his APs were preloaded with Voda's details, whereas I had to enter my XT ones manually from this fine forum :).

As far as we can tell (though neither of us are Android/Nexus experts) there is no difference at all between the two devices other than the 3G frequencies that they address.

One additional very promising indicator of a 'no interference' policy by VodaFone is that Andrew's Nexus did a direct OTA update from Android 2.1 to 2.2 as soon as it was brought to life. This bodes very well methinks :).

I don't think anyone has mentioned in this thread yet, that you can get google turn by turn navigation on your android phone. Install the maps[brut] apk from here

basically, it is another google map/navigation app, but it has been hacked to work in NZ. You can't uninstall the original maps app so you end up with the two apps on your phone. just set maps[brut] as the default.

I've used maps[brut] in NZ and australia for the past 2 months without any dramas. the guys at xda developers update the app every now and then too, as new versions of google maps come out

I've installed it on my Nexus One with CM 6 RC2 tonight...and it seems to work really well. It immediately gave spoken instructions that were clear and correct. I'll try it tomorrow on the way to work an see how well it goes. One of the issues with the hacked Nav was the voice instructions were often late or missing entirely, though it functioned correctly in every other respect

That was in an earlier version. They seem to have fixed it with this latest update, although she still says some odd things, like "continue on continue on third exit to Main Street". Still better than getting directions from my gf :)

Thanks for the lead. I installed it last night.

I've used it all day today and I'm really pleased with it. I got the 'continue on continue on' thing too, but not all the time - and it's not a biggie. Automatically muting the music player for navigation announcements is a nice touch too....

Now, does anyone know how to trick the Nexus One "Car Mode" into using brut rather than the original Google Maps? That would be the icing on the cake for me.

Droid's official 2.2 update is beening roll out this week and milestone's is on the way.

And there is a unofficial 2.2 for milestone(yes, there is custom roms even the bootloader is locked)

Maybe they were waiting for the Milestone to officailly get 2.2 then start selling the Milestone.

I asked someone at a Telecom store yesterday and they said the Milestone would be out very soon. They did not know anything about any other phones.

I had wondered idly if Vodafone may have ditched the HTC Desire because they found out Telecom NZ would be getting it (pure, 100% speculation based on Telstra selling Desire in OZ and sharing the same frequencies as Telecom XT....and Vodafone suddenly switching to Nexus One).

Milestone - a phone a year old and at end-of-life - seems an odd choice for a "new technology" network service provider.

Just odd.

And even more worrying (and the other reason I went to the Nexus One) the MileStone and Droid 1 do not meet hardware spec for Android 3, which is fast approaching...

But then again, August 5 sounds about right for the release date for the Droid 2 - surely Telecom wouldn't be hanging out and getting the latest and greatest??? Now *that* might cause me to move on it :).
