Typing this now on my eken via geekzone. Mobile. Upgraded to 1.4.7 software. I gather I don't get to the real android market with the eken fiirmware? Should I move to slatedroid?

I think all Eken firmwares are having issues with Google Market. For now I've decided I have no real reason to switch from official 1.7.4.

nathanmoyer21: NOTE: I really goofed on this one I forgot the biggest update I wanted to post that the box and listing says 2 GB but the damned thing is 1GB so BEWARE

Ive been playing with mine for a day or two now and I honestly wish this thing had at least 256 memory honestly and hen I gto to go back to the main home page screen it delays and sometimes gives an error stating that the home app is hanging but i always hit wait and it comes up within seconds........Scrolling sucks but hey, what can you expect for a buck and a quarter?? And  it got here within 2 days from ordering..So I cannot complain much...I hope upgrading the OS to 1.7.4 as has been suggested by other users  will make it better otherwise its going to craigslist or my daughter..Buy one with more memory and/or power but at least more memory if you are considering this its not worth the price when there are others out there just a little bit more expensive.

I have ECOTOX v1.1.1 on my M001 and it appears to be the best of the firmwares available.

The long lag getting from the browser to the desktop reduces to about 1 second or less with ECOTOX if you use the Home++ launcher / UI. *Plus*....I have a 96MB swap file on the sdcard and it gives me an effective 195MB of memory.....which is a HUGE improvement.

It's not hard to set up and once you've done it you find the M001 is actually pretty good. It's effectively a laptop for $150.

Scrolling works fine if you use an object like a stylus. I broke a 25cm knitting needle in half so i could type and scroll two-handed....and though it isn't fast, the *accuracy* goes way up...so you waste less time.

There is a work-around and it does work sometimes......but I have an Android phone so getting the apps is not an issue.

There are alternate markets like SlideME that work fine.

If you need a small app that's free, let me know and I'll email it to an address you can access via the M001 and then you can just download it via the browser (coz the Gmail app won't download non-image/audio attachments).

I've gone back to the Eken software.. 1.7.4 for now.   Is there a better browser than comes with this load?
(particuarly allowing bookmarks).  Also email client which does pop3 access?

Sounds like a plan, since android market is broken.. thanks. :)

Eken looks interesting, the market seems to be expanding quite quickly.  I'd recomend www.shanzai.com for reviews and news of tablets coming out of China.  The Witstech A81-E looks like it could be good.  A stable Android 2.1 model with 256mb+ ram is what I'll be looking for later in the year.

Would like to get Skyfire browser for android.. The download never actually starts on the android market :(

I did use the Eken M001 for approx 3 hours 15 minutes with brightness turned right down, before the battery ran out. Not bad, not bad at all!

I ran skyfire on mine and wasnt too impressed. It was very sluggish compared to the built in browser.  As for downloading it the market really doesnt work at all well on the m001s yet without too much mucking around. Ive stuck it on my dropbox for you:  Skyfire 2.2 Android - its around 1.5mb..

Ahh ok thanks...  Mainly want it so I can monitor my radio station when away from home.  I run a flash player on the website.  Unless of course there is a Shoutcast player app available?

I'll download Skyfire tonight and have a look.. thanks for doing that for me.

ZollyMonsta: I went and ordered one of these puppies.. Only costing me $60 kiwi.

http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.42070

I've been watching this thread for a while now, and finally picked up the courage (aka disregarded the budget) and ordered one.

Very much looking forward to seeing if it arrives in a timely fashion, and just how easy to use it is.
My secret master plan is get my partner using it. She doesn't know it yet ;)

kind regards Andrew TD

Hope you didnt order from Deal Extreme :) I cancelled my order there and got one locally since Deal Extreme could not provide stock arrival dates.  Their ones are too popular and there is a huge backlog of orders waiting to be fulfilled.

I did actually. The site suggests that they have current stock now (since  19 July). So, I'm hopeful, but not confident, it will get shipped in a timely fashion :)

kind regards Andrew TD

I know other people that have bought stuff from dealextreme in the past and have been amazed how quick it arrived.
You might have just ordered at a bad time Zollymonster - of course that would make anyone a little nervous.

It will be interesting to see how quick yours arrives Andrew.
