I noticed yesterday that my X5 was telling me it had been been running 21hr's since charge when it told me there was 15% battery life left i.e charge it now :P, this was including some fairly heavy web surfing and wifi switched on for maybe half that time.

I am running it at 1ghz, all data/updating on, running auto task killer, gmail, skype etc so a very normal case scenario. I am running setcpu and forcing hte cpu down to 245mhz when screen is off which i suspect is helping somewhat

nzkiwiman: No social networking, no data gathering widgets. Wifi is set to sleep and background data is off.

Still using an iPod Touch, it is always connected to my home Wifi without any data movement. My X5 in theory is configured the same way - wifi on, no data movement but leaches battery life with the iPod Touch just sits there and battery life stays rock solid.

I think there are two main differences between the X5 and an iPod touch that would affect the battery life: first the X5 appears to run the cpu at full speed even when the screen is off (as opposed to the i9000 that drops it to 100mhz and iOs that also scales the cpu). If you want to resolve this you may need to root and use setcpu. Secondly even if data is disabled the phone still requires a cellular connection which will rapidly drain the battery in areas with poor reception.

It might pay to read this thread on the XDA Forums: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1056320

NB: regarding the cpu thing: I don't have an X5 but am basing this on all of the accounts I've read on different forums.

The CPU thing makes sense. I'm not going to root just yet .. maybe in a month or so.
Full Extended 3G were I live so it shouldn't be that.

Did change the Wifi Sleep options to turn off when screen is off and just brought the advanced Juice Defender so I will see how that goes next week. No strange dead in 2 hours like on Monday which is an improvement

My biggest improvement in battery life was after uninstalling Auto Task Killer, that thing was slaying my battery!

I have wi-fi on ALL the time, and my battery lasts all day now, even with Plume running, light web browsing, couple of phone calls and near constant texting.

The X5 is a really good phone once you tweak it to fit around you.

I've found since installing Juice Defender and using it to disallow certain apps to go on the internet I'm also saving a lot of battery. I think some programs like Aldiko, Hi Space (does anyone know what that is?) and Layar must be doing stuff in the background all the time.

Also setting Google maps to only connect to data when I have the app open seems to help, otherwise I think it's constantly trying to work out where you are and load up the map fo the area.

Hope this helps!

You can use SetCpu without rooting your device, obviously you cannot increase the speed beyond its 800mhz however you can set it to scale the speed depending on demand which will give you great benefit without any adverse effect

Been off charge today for 12hrs, still got 60% battery - no usage aside from being connected to cell towers (no sending and receiving of anything today - all quiet)

I have been keeping an eye the stats of SetCPU and noticed the following

CPU Speed between 122mhz ~ 268mhz around 33% of the time

CPU Speed between 246mhz ~ 400mhz around 50% of the time

CPU Speed between 700mhz ~ 800mhz around 2% of the time

CPU Speed between 1ghz around 15% of the time

So assuming the X5 doesn't naturally scale CPU I can see how it might consume excess power running @ 800mhz 24/7, likewise why clocking the CPU doesn't create any significant heat increase as it is only being utilised occasionally

So how does doing all of this affect your "Android OS" % use of the battery?

Is it still using large abouts of battery?

Did some interesting fiddling with my (unrooted) X5:

Problem: Battery life after 2 months was about 12 hours, on wifi pretty much all day. GPS usually turned off, 3g data usually turned off.

Fix: (1) Uninstalled auto task killer
(2) Installed free beta of juicedefender.

Result: Battery life on normal use is now approx 2-3 days.

DONE.
