@landcruiserguy : Huh, I missed the part about sms included as part of WiFi calling. Neat!
@roderickh : Thanks for the confirmation, and good tip about the SD card. I was wondering about that, but hadn't got around to finding out.
roderickh:
Confirming that's the one I used, guide on the right with Odin. Pretty straight forward instructions.
I used samsung smart switch to create a backup onto my SD card which I used to later restore from a fresh install. Your call.
Same.. works mint.. battery is still running as good as it was the day I flashed it..

yggdrasil: Hi, question:
I just realized I don't have a "wifi calling" item on my Connections menu like the Australian XSA firmware does (from the pic on the previous page). I'm running the stock Spark firmware. I have a couple of dumb questions:
1. What's wifi calling do?
2. Will it work if the carrier doesn't support it?
3. I've flashed ROMs before (used to run custom roms on all my phones) but haven't bothered lately and am out of practice. Can you suggest a good source for step by step instructions for updating to the XSA rom? Is Odin still a thing?
Many thanks
Can't speak for for the people that have actually done the upgrade, but if Samsung doesn't get their fecal matter together soon, I was planning on using this: https://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/galaxy-note9/SM-N960F/XSA/download/N960FXXU2CSA2/251540/

Thanks for the reply and the info.
One big question: are you rooted? I thought the only way to make a proper backup to storage was to be rooted and do it with Titanium. I say "proper" because I lost some data after trying to transfer everything with Smart Switch when I was moving to my current phone.
The instructions on Sammobile are pretty good, and I'm sure I can do it. But I'm kinda pissed about needing to, I have to say.
Thanks to all who replied to my questions, appreciate it.

Not rooted, didn't see the need with this phone so far (and I didn't wanna risk trigerring knox). Yes you are probably correct with Titanium, it is a more transparent process and probably backs up better than samsung's system.
What data did you lose last time? I didn't think I lost anything TBH, majority of apps have my data stored in the cloud, if anything it was Spotify that I had to redownload 10gbs worth of songs but didn't notice any other.
Do note that if you use plenty of good lock apps, nearly all aren't compatible with pie as of yet (Grrr Samsung.. where's the routines update...)
Sammobile throttling to 15kb/s is ridiculous. Does anyone have a different link for a quicker DL?
Cheers.
networkn: I'd never take my chances from a non official site.
SamMobile isn't official. Either way, you can check the hash and be confident you have an unmodified version of the firmware.

On what data I lost:
It was pretty random, and probably has to do with how and where apps store data. I use a note-taking app called ColorNote, and the app was copied across, but none of the notes. I actually noticed this after the Smart Switch run, and could not find any way to transfer the notes themselves manually. Actually wound up losing a lot of important stuff (I was in the store and wanted to wipe my trade-in device before I handed it over). I also use an e-reader with an online library called Aldiko -- app copied across but lost the contents of the library. Also, I had an e-book in app form that someone had built which I had downloaded from the play store. After the transfer, I noticed the app wasn't there, so I looked for it on the play store, and found that the free one I downloaded years ago couldn't be found, but there were paid versions of the same book for sale. I don't want to give those paid versions any advertising, but this is a historic book that's long out of copyright. I think the one I downloaded was still on my old phone, but it's definitely not on the new one.
Cheers
I can't seem to find it anywhere else but I'm getting a smooth 300kb/s regardless. It's giving me flashbacks to the old limewire days!
I'm happy to add it to my GDrive if anyone else needs it (in 5 hrs time).

Dang that's a shame - guess the software isn't perfect yet and may be worthwhile checking the backup file before you wipe this time?
On another note, UAE exynos has received Feb security patch ontop of their Pie update....

Despite being deprecated since 2014, the Samfirm tool still allows direct downloads of full builds from Samsung's servers at satisfying speeds when the required info is plugged in. Was a pleasant surprise when I needed to grab the German/DBT base build to test the One UI beta at the tail end of last year.
