Just rooted it and made my knox 0x1 #yolo Im sorry samsung but I will do what i like with my device, and under the CGA you cant refuse to fix it (If I ever did need to get it fixed which hopefully I wont)

I was looking for a saferoot that didnt void knox like there was with 4.3 but it doesnt appear there is one so this :)

I agree and you are right as to me it isn't a biggie but since I can have KK with old bootloader without breaking Knox then thats the option I'll take. This is getting to be one of the lonegst spells on one custom Roms I have had for years but no real reason to change at the moment as nothing much new and everything works fine and great battery life although having it matched to the Gear 2 has a bit of a difference.

This whole time I was under the impression that if you deliberately brick the phone, SAMSUNG is able to refuse to fix your device.
I just purchased an S4 and the last thing I want to do is brick it. It would be a waste of 650 bucks.

Does bricking it still have the same literal meaning as it did in previous years? As in, you brick it and there is NO RECOVERY. It's a brick. Or is there a way to fix it yourself?

I wouldn't mind stock Android on my S4 as it was the most appealing thing about the Nexus 5...The bloatware on this S4 is driving me insane. Constantly forcing it's updates on me, re-enabling themselves after I've disabled them the day before. Better than WP7.1 though.

There are ways to brick a phone and make it useless. Disrespective overwrote the IMEI/EFS information which meant it wouldn't work as a phone, and he had no backup. I found two ways to back it up after that.

The best way to disable annoying apps seems to be to have titanium backup freeze them. I've also deleted a LOT of apk files, using a script I found online that I customised. There's on apk, I forget the name, that brings back the annoying apps if you don't delete that recovery apk.

Yes that is what bricking means - generally no way of recovering without use of a jtag device or something else that writes directly to low level components (I've heard of some corrupt bootloaders being rewritten or bypassed using a UART connection). In other words, yes, bricked means it's a paperweight.

However, the term "bricked" is used incorrectly so often that it has kind of lost all meaning. I have heard the term "partial brick" but other than that, these days if someone says their device is bricked, chances are it's actually not.

Samsung phones are generally quite difficult to kill with software mods. The Note 3 has a helpful feature that lets it rebuild a corrupted or accidentally erased EFS partition, making it harder again to kill completely. 'Soft bricking', or bootlooping, is much more common, but generally very easy for those in the know to recover from with a reflash through ODIN or a data reset through recovery. It is a shame that Samsung has alienated some of the development community with the Knox counter approach in the name of (similarly niche, but much more profitable) enterprise deployment, as this was one of HTC's missteps in years past. Smartphones are quite rapidly becoming the kind of commodity product where homebrew development is less active, necessary, or desirable outside of bleeding edge enthusiast groups, and I suspect we'll see more lock-in and lock-down in the market in the near future.

I'm personally a huge fan of the way comparatively open platforms like Android allow or even encourage folks with the right skills to fix the things that are, in their opinion, broken or missing. Or just allowing alternative takes on common usage patterns - Android's modularity meaning that essentially any one app/function/'module', e.g. camera, browser, keyboard, calculator, home launcher, can be replaced with any number of fundamentally different third party alternatives. That's what keeps me on board, and as development and innovation slows (Both from third party developers and Google itself), so, unfortunately, does my interest.

Has anyone else been having trouble with wifi since the kitkat update? I am using the Telecom 4.4.2 kitkat rom, Which was freshly flashed and factory resetted after. Every so often the internet stops loading and then suddenly a message appears that says Wifi network now connected or something

guys ... since 4.4.2 have you noticed the phone being very laggy?

mine will hang for seconds when pressing the home button now every so often, it's quite annoying .

not sure if i need to full wipe, or if it's nova launcher or what ..but at least 3 friends all have the same issues since upgrading to the official telecom rom.

they did theirs via OTA, i did mine via odin ... same results .. lag city

Nope, unless I have it update apps on google place at the same time as I sync my RSS feeds and check email and facebook at the same time. I'm on WanamLite, which is stock less Odin with a couple of optimisations.
