I'm going to have another run at it now that the Pixel 4 XL is on special at the Amazon store - from what I have read on B&H it appears that it does support LTE Band 28 - could anyone confirm whether that is the case? I'm looking at using it on Skinny.

Edit: I took the plunge. Grabbed the Pixel 4 XL White since the colour doesn't matter because I've got a case for it as well.

According to GSMArena the US version supports these bands

LTE band 1(2100), 2(1900), 3(1800), 4(1700/2100), 5(850), 7(2600), 8(900), 12(700), 13(700), 14(700), 17(700), 18(800), 19(800), 20(800), 25(1900), 26(850), 28(700), 29(700), 30(2300), 38(2600), 39(1900), 40(2300), 41(2500), 46(5200), 48, 66(1700/2100), 71(600) - USA

so it should be okay for Band 28

I am running my P4 on 2degrees and it works perfectly. Roaming to the wairarapa worked fine too.

The Pixel 4 had no fingerprint reader. I use 4 banking apps that use my fingerprint to unlock them. Does that means I'm going to have to go back to pin password until the apps are updated m

Can any NZ owners report on how the lack of soli impacts face unlock? Is it noticably slower or not much of an issue? Thanks

It's not awful. I find it slower sometimes simply because I have the phone to close to my face haha. It's fast once you have the phone in front of your face. All Soli was doing was anticipating you picking your phone up and readying the face unlock sensors early.

In short, yes. I'm back to pin access for my bank. It's not too bad I have to confess... But I am hoping they'll do face unlock soon given I'm with one of the big Aussie banks.

Face unlock is pretty good, works with sunglasses on and yes... With your eyes closed too

Sounds like anyone could pick up your phone and use face unlock.

Yes and no. If you were sleeping your partner could unlock your phone using your face.

Google apparently had a fix coming where it will require your eyes to be open for it to unlock.

Finally got my Pixel 4 XL (friend brough it back from the US). Seems pretty nice.

As anticipated the lack of a fingerprint reader has impacted 3/4 of the banks I use the fingerprint reader. Two are local banks (ANZ and Westpac) and 2 are US. Only one of my US banks has implemented face unlock so they obviously changed the app to use the new API's. I hope the local banks fix this soon. The fingerprint reader was very handy.

I'm heading to Australia in April and am seriously thinking about buying a Pixel while I'm there. I have a couple of questions I'm hoping someone can answer...

  1. Looking at online reviews of the 3XL and 4XL, a surprising number seem to be saying the 4 isn't worth it. But reading between the lines, I think they're saying "If you already have a 3, it's not worth upgrading to a 4". But if (like me) you're upgrading for a 4 year old HTC phone, you'd go straight to the 4, right?

I mean, I'm not that fussed about some of the new 4 functionality (face unlock - nice idea but I'd be happy enough with the fingerprint sensor, and motion sense - which is of questionable use in the first place (IMHO) and won't work in NZ anyway), but the newer processor, increased RAM, upgraded camera, improved display, a year longer of software updates... all worth the additional NZ$452 (at the time of writing, according to JB Hi-Fi's .au website). Anyhoo, the 3XL is a "clearance item" in many places now - it might not even be available when I get to Australia in a couple of months...

  2. Will the Aussie 4XL work with no problems on the Spark network in New Zealand?

I find the network compatibility stuff a bit confusing, particularly where it's listed differently on different sites (e.g. bands on the 4XL specs on Google's website vs. frequencies for the various networks in this thread. And if this info. is on Spark's own website, they're hiding it well. They seem to prefer you just enter the phone's IMEI and they'll tell you whether it's compatible or not.

I don't think it's worth getting a 3XL over a 4XL unless you really were going to miss the fingerprint sensor. Like you say, the 4XL has a better screen, newer processor, better camera and will see longer support. Also the 3XL has a horribly ugly notch 😋

My 4XL is purchased from JB HiFi AU and works perfectly on Spark.
