Kopkiwi: If Samsung go the cheap plastic construction again, I won't be getting it. Have put up with it for a year now because it's been the best on the market but with Sony and HTC releasing great phones recently and the Motorola Google X hopefully living up to the rumors I won't be buying the crap build of Samsung if it isn't improved.
My big problem with these more substantial phones is: what happens if you drop them onto a hard surface? The good thing about a plastic chassis is that it will deform slightly and take a lot of the impact. This is force that isn't being passed on to the more fragile components, e.g.the screen.
Given the number of people that I know personally who have had to replace cracked glass on their iPhones, I can say for sure that having a "solid, well-built" phone is not always a good thing. Compare that with my plastic S2, which has been dropped from waist height on its front corner onto concrete, and only has a mark on the case to show for it.
It's certainly possible that some of these other phones have good drop resistance. I'm certainly not in a position to find out. The one thing I do know is that I do not want to have to buy a case for my new phone. If I've just bought a sleek new phone the last thing I want to do is to bulk it out with a case (which is most likely ugly to boot).
