I keep phones for 2-3 years usually. S4 2-3 years, Huawei P9 3 years, Xiaomi for two weeks but fingerprint sensor sucked so sold it, Moto G8 plus. I think I will try to sell the G8 plus for the Pixel 4a, I can't see myself keeping the G8 plus for years but I probably could with the 4a. I did like the good cameras on the Xiaomi, particularly the wide lens.

Lack of extra camera lenses seems to be the #1 complaint about the 4a. To be honest I would have paid an extra $50 for some slightly higher specs.

Interesting you don't intend to hang on to the G8. It was on my list of potentials, and I may have gone there if not for the 4a. Why are you less of a fan? I had one of the earlier Moto Gs for a good few years until I got my current OnePlus. Loved them back in the day.

I'd prefer something a little smaller and a little faster. It's fast enough, I'm just impatient ;)

tieke:

As far as Xiaomi goes, I've been using various Redmi Note Pro models since my Nexus 5 died and they are great quality phones.  It was a toss-up for me between the Pixel 4a and the Redmi K30 Ultra, which should have an international release in a month or so at a similar price to the 4a, but Google's camera integration gave it the edge. (The K30 Ultra stats are pretty mad for a cheapish phone though - supports 5g, 4500mAh battery, Dimensity 1000+ processor, quad rear cameras and a pop-up front one etc. Bit big though - 6.67")

I found the Xiamoi fast, good build, good camera, OS was fine, but the in-screen fingerprint reader really didn't work for me. Couple that with them disabling smart lock (or whatever it is that lets you keep your phone unlocked in trusted places) it was a no for me.

I decided to go for it, with the Spigen Rugged Armour case. Delivery in 2-4 weeks. I payed for the next tier up of shipping as I think DHL or similar is worth $14 over chancing it with DPD / Aramex. DHL can get a package from the USA to my house faster than Aramex can get a package from Auckland to Wellington.

I have this case on my Pixel 2 XL, it's a top notch case from a really good brand so good choice.

I've had that case model for three or four phones 🙂 The G8 version is quite thick, the P9 version slimmer which I prefer. The Spigen slim cases are polycarbonate rather than more grippy TPU.

Oops, it's now unavailable on Amazon. This is what I get for dwelling for days on whether to get it from the US or work out how to get it from Australia.

It's the #1 selling phone, probably lots of pent up demand people making it. I guess they're selling either stock they have or have on the way, so as more stock is available it will come back available. This website might alert you when it's available again, I've used it in the past as a price monitor. Maybe Amazon can alert you themselves.

BestBuy seem to still have it in stock, and while I don't know if they forward to NZ themselves, somewhere like here might?

Amazon is currently forecasting delivering my phone early to mid October... must be a lot of demand.

Ah an early orderer! Interested to hear how you find it. Mine's roughly a month away.

According to UPS tracking my Pixel 4a arrives either tomorrow or Tuesday. Exciting! Yes early order :).

Curious to know if Spark HD calling works with it
