Hi MF,
I have had use of the Milestone and was able to get the Motonav trial running without visiting a computer, however it was a bit unintuitive, halfway throught he setup when it prompts you to go to a PC, you can press skip, It gives you the idea you will be quitting the setup, but you're not.

Hopefully you got the car kit as well, when you put in in the cradle it auto switches to car-home-mode, which is very easy to use while in the car.

The Motonav also has speed limits and audible warnings, however I found the speed limit sometimes to be wrong, particularly on SH2 between lower hutt and the interchange.

Hmm I'm using Milestone XT720

-Motorola Portal is very very handy
-Motonav not available to NZ yet, don't know if it's because my phone is UK version...cannot find NZ in country list
-Milestone with OMAP 3430 runs at 550Mhz, with CPU designed at 600Mhz... using XT720 original CPU module also runs at 550Mhz...find it way too slow...
-Very good metal casing better than i9000=plastic toy

Whoever getting milestone should root it and get milestoneoverclock12.apk try OC it to 1Ghz it's SO much faster.

Yes, realised this later when I noticed the "60 day trial" message.

It works in New Zealand, and New Zealand is available in the drop down country list.

Having said all that, I am a bit surprised with battery life. It could be this battery though. Basically have the phone at 100% 11pm when I went to bed, and at 6am the phone was dead. It wouldn't even turn one. Put on the charger and it showed 5% on the screen. Will do another full charge and see what happens...

Go menu - settings - phone info - battery info and there is a function which tells you what in the phone has been using the battery the most. This will identify what is using it and you can adjust settings or remove those features.

I Found the screen backlight to be set to far too long and by adjustng it was able to drastically increase the battery life.

That would be great if the whole "from 100% to 5%" didn't happen from 11pm to sometime before 6am, while I was sleeping. The phone wouldn't even turn on, so had to charge it - completely invalidating the stats.

Milestone now live on Telecom Online Mobile Store site, peeps. Still shows as 'coming soon' pending the official launch, but at least there are some pretty pics...

$999 for outright, and apparently special contract pricing still to come.

Bugger, you bet me to it by 20 mins! I saw it there and throught I must have been mis-reading, but yeah, still 'coming soon', just like Christmas.....

As someone said before (in this thread?) why cannot they just sell them to those who want them (like me!) as long as they make it clear there is an issue, and just update then latter?

Is there is only 1 issue, and only with txting, doesn't that leave 6,391 other features of the phone and Android to play with?!?!?!

Ok, an update on the battery life... Last night it was much better, no problems at all. And here is why: one of the first things I did when I got the phone was to install the available Facebook update.

Yesterday I noticed another Facebook update available. So I installed it before going to bed.

It just happens that Facebook has released this update to address battery life problems created by the first update.

That's what happens when developers create crappy multitasking apps that don't handle things properly when they go the the background.

Perhaps Microsoft and Apple got it right but limiting multitasking and freezing apps in background with a notification broker system?

Anyway, this is not exactly a Milestone problem, so this is out of the list now.

The hacked "Maps [brut]" version of Google Maps (and Nav) now works virtually 100%. I installed it on my Nexus One - just like any other app - and drove to Parnell and back. It announced every turn and change at an appropriate and convenient time in advance of the action required. There was some 'funky' repetition of words )"...Continue on continue on to blah st..." and it thinks "Northern Mwy" is pronounced "northern M-why"...but that just made it more fun. The hacked version works just fine alongside the Google Maps, even if it's a different version. It's set up to be an entirely separate app.

It works fine on un-rooted phones. Get it here

Mauricio (or others with the "demo" model?) - just looking at the info on the Telecom website, it says that it is not tethering capable - is that the case? I need to be able to use it as a 3g modem for my Tosh R500 when I'm away from the office. Would be somewhat unhelpful if I can't do so.

Its described as a "NZ legal phone" whatever that (meaningless!) statement might be interpreted as meaning! Wonder where it came from - doesn't say specifically, but says it is "bundled with a special Car Mount and Cradle + Car Charger - worth $200 - for using the Milestone as a Sat Nav GPS device." He fails to mention that the standard Telecom package also includes those things! I couldn't help wondering if it came from the recent launch!

I haven't tested tethering, because I rather use a UB modem... But at first sight there isn't an Internet Connection Sharing app pre-installed, although I am sure something must be available in the Marketplace. Will look around later.

Haven't tested it also, because like you I have a USB modem, however just in case.

Thanks - I know it isn't possible as standard on other versions but wondered if things had changed for telecom version. There are solutions - rooting allows access no problem apparently (not an option for me). There is also an app called PDANet apparently does it OK (needs software installed on PC I gather, so would be fine for main computer but if you wanted to plug it in temporarily to someone elses I guess it would be a problem!!)

Verizon is also catching some flack as the upcoming 2.2 upgrade for the Droid won't include tethering or wi-fi hotspot capability (http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2010/08/verizon-droid-android-update/) - and resons given are somewhat spurious!

Ah well - just have to decide how well the software works as an alternative. I note Galaxy S appears to have tethering built in according to Samsung. Wouldn't it be nice if Telecom offered the SGS later in the year!!
