rocky289: Has anyone had any sucess getting the "Real Player Beta" to run on this device?

It's worth remembering the M001 and devices with the same VIA MW8505 processor do roughly 300MHz. I have seen mine play an MP4 video file with continuous sound, but only snatches of the video about a minute apart and maybe 5 seconds long. They just can't keep up. MP4 requires too much processing power.....

For the price, these devices offer a great set of features and functions and work very much like netbooks. But for the $156 I paid for mine, I keep in mind the compromises made to keep the price that low.

I expect I'll buy a much better Android tablet toward the end of the year or early next year. But for getting my feet wet, the M001 has been awesome.

Regarding video playback.
I have used the KoyoteSoft converter.
Chose the preset PSP setting for the conversion.
Seems to work fine, although there is a slight speech mismatch.

The RockPad chip ones do ok, 600mhz proc, 600mhz DSP, but they do still slowdown on 720p, as in the frames start lagging, the sound keeps up

DivX runs fine, as do most files, but cna't say I'd recommend one, coming from the Galaxy S multitouch going to a single touch resistant screen....feels really bad eh :S

c71931f: Can someone tell me the difference between http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.42071 & http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.42275 ... before i order/buy one please? :/

They are virtually identical, though one is an "Eken" in the pic and the other is a no-name.

I think even the Chinese manufacturers have trouble with local "knock-offs".

I have no first-hand way of knowing what, if any, practical or quality differences may exist. My own M001 is a no-name version of the Eken M001. It works OK. So far. Fingers-crossed.

Maybe the knock-off / no name stole some of the software whereas Eken paid for a licence....maybe....maybe not.

This is 'wild west' Chinese gear.

I bought off TradeMe so there would be at least a hint of local accountability under local law. You buy from China if you're happy to risk your US$100....lotto-style. If you get a good peice of kit in a timely fashion: you win. If not.....well, you bought the ticket and it didn't pay out. :-)

Good! So it (TradeMe, fit-for-sale, redress) works. Sorry it crapped out. Mine has been great...so my luck holds yet again.

I've been paying some attention to Chinese manufacturing in recent years. Some of it is second to none....but below that level are the tiers of manufacturers who can't sell based on quality and instead cut corners until they bleed.

It pays to read the specs carefully and look as much at what isn't there as what is there.......but then you have to have a reasonably good grasp of the whole picture to be able to spot the gaps.

I've been in IT almost 30 years...and my current job is to spot the gaps in processes and software......so that helps me in my personal purchases.

I'm pretty keen on getting one of these. I've been watching a few auctions and they seem to be getting withdrawn by TradeMe?? Even one I was watching that was a secondhand one. Have TM decided these devices are pirated/illegal somehow?

There are some dodgy traders on there alright & you won't get any answers out of trademe either.

My guess would be that they were pushing the bids up in some way and TradeMe detected it.

I ordered one via dealextreme and it arrived in the country today (got it redirected to my work for delivery tomorrow). Took approximately 7 days to arrive - less than getting something from Auckland!

TradeMe is yanking a few types:

1. Drop-shippers. You win the auction, then they place the order from their supplier. Or the order is in, but their goods haven't arrived yet.
2. People selling goods without NZ-approved power connectors (other compliant vendors complain)
3. Auctions with incorrect details that have resisted correction.....like the person selling "600GHz" android tablets....who blacklists anyone who tries to tell him he's got it wrong....

Just TradeMe being TradeMe. The growing number of shonky Chinese traders isn't helping. Corruption is rife in China...and the people who think that way don't leave that mindset at the border when they get here. Most are fine, of course....but enough of them aren't that it pays to be generally cautious.

I hope I don't sound racist or anti-Chinese. I'm not. I generally love the people and the culture. But there are some not-nice people there and we've let a good number of them into NZ in recent years...as "business investors".... No surprise all the biggest P-busts and poachers being caught these days come from there.

My first Eken m001 was DOA (cracked screen) - darn it.

Dealextreme seem reasonable to deal with though - they have a good RMA system (although their first reply was "You get fixed local and we give you discount, ok?".

Somehow I think it would cost more than USD$95 just to look at fixing a cracked touchscreen - let alone actually getting the part and fixing it!

TM pulled my auction for the eken m003 because they said it was too similar to an ipad, however the photo's were the actual device showing android running and the auction never mentioned ipad or apple.

Crazy really, still FS if someones interested and wants to PM me

Damnit, my Pad stopped working so didn't get time for a review :(

Will be getting a replacement one in about a week and a bit, anyone had any troubles with the Ekens dying? Can't really recommend an aPad at this stage, however this might change

Oh and Siideways, damn right about that fake RRP,did you complain about it?

TradeMe are being dicks. There are some people there who really don't have a clue.

Re-list it, include a link to a web page with all the specs - even if you have to set up a blogspot.com page to do it. Make it REALLY OBVIOUS this is NOT an iPad.

Use caps, if necessary. Put text titles in any pics you use, like  "Eken M003" embossed on the photo.

Trademe can't accuse you of misleading anyone if you make it really obvious what it is you're selling.

Otherwise, try sella.co.nz

That's where I sold my Acer Liquid after TradeMe yanked my auction and cost me a sale.....of a phone I had bought on TradeMe!

My M001 is going strong so far. Every day is a good day. Here's mine as it is today:

Firmware: ECOTOX v1.1.1 (rooted)
Home: Home++
Memory: 101MB RAM + 94MB linux swap = 195MB

Works much better now than when I unboxed it.

M001 Still Alive

I'm gonna make a video to show what a difference that swap file makes. :-)
