freitasm: Apparently there are other Android handsets to come on Telecom XT.

maybe a special "coming soon" section on the Telecom website!!Laughing  I think the Milestone was the first time I had seen that - perhaps because of the last minute muckups - everyone knew it was coming?

Used Motonav today... Very impressive, although a couple of times I thought there was a road on the map when nothing on the "live" stream (real life).

Nice, clear sound through Bluetooth. It warns about roundabouts 800m away, but it should give a couple of seconds more on turn left/right instructions.

Quite precise though, and it worked well in Wellington - I intentionally went through Thorndon, Wadestown to Johnsonville, seeing SH was closed tonight because of the rain.

It might even be worth the US$60 after the trial - but the question is which maps are there? CoPilot would cost almost the same but comes with Australia and New Zealand maps.

Wow... Just found a big #fail here.

Every day I delete a emails on my device - anything just under 100 to a couple of hundreds. After sync those are removed from the Exchange server, but... They remain in the device's Trash folder.

Now comes the #fail: there isn't an option to empty the Trash folder on the device itself. You have to manually select the emails to delete. Today I had about 500 emails there.

Can you imagine this?

Might have to rethink this whole thing now. Just when I started liking the device. But my mobile devices are mainly email machines.

Mauricio, Google Apps works quite well on android! ;-)

My views (except when I am looking out their windows) are not those of my employer.

Ouch - that doesn't sound good.  And there seems to be a few people experiencing the same issue on other Android 2.1 devices, so this isn't limited to the Milestone.  Sounds like we may need to wait until Android 2.2 is rolled out on more devices, which has a chance of fixing it (it has a lot more Exchange Server functionality).

In the meantime, most people seem to be using K9 Mail as a way around this - have you tested that approach, Mauricio?

Corporate email is good because it supports Exchange ActiveSync, Calendar and Contact - K9 is only email and no ActiveSync support.

IF they don't have this fixed in 2.2 then certainly not even worth looking at it. I mean, PO/IMAP and Exchange emails that remain in Trash forever?

There doesn't appear to be an "empty trash" option on my Nexus One either, running 2.2 and using the supplied email app (although I'm using an IMAP account rather than Exchange).

Mauricio, is your email client the default Android one or is it supplied by Motorola?

It's the default one... And how do you empty the Trash on yours then? Or it empties automatically when you sync?

My desktop is configured to empty the Trash (which is stored server-side) after one day so that's "crossing over" to the phone whenever I check my mail on my desktop.

I can see that I'd be just as frustrated as you if I didn't have that option set up. I have a copy of the Android 2.2 User's Guide here and it doesn't tell me anything helpful either.

Comments and feedback from using my Milestone.....

  • Setup - there appears to be an issue with the corporate email and gmail... corp calendar  will not work if you set up your gmail account first (as prompted) and then calendar. Skip the gmail setup on install and then set up copr email and calnedar. Come back yo the gmail setting when you have finished

  • Multiple gmail accounts - only the first calendar gets synced to your phone... make sure you choose the right one

  • Mapping - the included 60 day trial of Moto Nav is good but ~$70 after that. Brut Google maps works but the pictures for the round abouts go anti clockwise (American) and it pronounces "Ave" as in "Ave Maria" (funny but then annoying)

  • If you completely! flatten the battery (is this a good idea?) the USB port of your PC does not seem to supply enough power to restart the phone. You need to use the plug in charger.

  • Belt clip - if you need a belt clip check for the magnetic clasp. The one that I was supplied with, if you have the back of the phone facing out it will put the phone into the "Moto Car" interface, and if you move the phone across the magnet you can get a multimedia station interface.

  • Moto Car - if you accidentally select the "use as default" for the incorrect Moto car app then you need to go Home, settings, Applications, Manage application, Select the incorrect application and then click "clear Defaults" and the prompt will be restored.

Other than that..... Great toy!

Apps that I have installed

  • Advanced task Killer Free - Kill tasks

  • Air control lite - Great Game!!

  • Android agenda widget - Display you calendar on the home screens

  • Battery Left - How much time before it goes flat

  • Google Goggles - Search by Picture

  • Key Ring - loyalty card bar code keeper

  • Layar - Augmented Reality

  • MotoTorch LED - LED lights as a torch

  • War Drive - Wifi search

Another two things that should be essential in an smartphone but are not here:

- Email filter: type a word or part of, and only the emails with that in the subject or sender shows up in the list. Important when you are looking at a folder that receives hundreds of emails per hour.

- Dial by name: open the dialer and start spelling a name using the dialpad. It should list all names that could be spelt with those letters. Useful when you have 1500+ contacts and don't want to search first.

Used Motononav again last night from Wellington CBD to TVNZ Avalon Studios in Lower Hutt. Still quite cool but it has wrong speed limits everywhere. Idon't mean some 70km/h zones listed as 50km/h zones in the city (understandable small error), but listing State Highway 1 and State Highway 2 as 50km/h zones all the way is too large an error.

Yes, yes. There's always an App for that. But in the "old" Windows Mobile, going on for five years and counting it's in the original dialer. Just saying...

More findings: the voice activated dial is pretty bad. On my Windows Mobile I can clear hear the phone over Bluetooth, and my instructions, such as "Call [name] on mobile" are executed promptly.

With the Milestone I find that "Call [name]" seems to always come back with three options, and ""Do you want to call [name 1]?" to which I say "No", then followed by the same question for the next two names.

Haven't got it to find the right name the first time yet...

Another thing I found: if you delete a folder from your Exchange server, the folder is not removed from your device...
