nitrotech: TM pulled my auction for the eken m003 because they said it was too similar to an ipad, however the photo's were the actual device showing android running and the auction never mentioned ipad or apple.

Crazy really, still FS if someones interested and wants to PM me

Yeah I was actually watching that auction and that's why I posted here. Fair enough if they are pulling the dodgey ones who don't actually have the stock but that sucks they pulled yours off. Probably getting pressure from Apple reps.

@linuxluver - I've checked out a few of your posts about the custom firmware, I think when I get one of these I'll definitly go down that road. Would be great to see a video comparison of responsiveness/speed.

vinnieg: Damnit, my Pad stopped working so didn't get time for a review :(

Will be getting a replacement one in about a week and a bit, anyone had any troubles with the Ekens dying? Can't really recommend an aPad at this stage, however this might change

Oh and Siideways, damn right about that fake RRP,did you complain about it?

My M001 is going strong so far. Every day is a good day. Here's mine as it is today:

Firmware: ECOTOX v1.1.1 (rooted)
Home: Home++
Memory: 101MB RAM + 94MB linux swap = 195MB

Works much better now than when I unboxed it.

M001 Still Alive

DAmn that reminds me of mine already :( only another 12 days to wait(6-10 days there, 3 days via UPS  back)  is that running 1.6? How is the screen brightness vs your phone?

I have moved across the ditch.  Now residing in Melbourne as a VOIP/Video Technical Trainer/Engineer.

FYI: My first one (an M001) took 7 days from dealextreme (ordered it on a Saturday, arrived the following Sunday into NZ, delivered Monday). Unfortunately I had to ship it back today (cracked screen), but overall I was pleased with the speed of shipping.

I just bought a new black M001 on TradeMe for $126. Not sure why anyone would have an auction end at 9:34 on a Friday morning.....but the win goes to me. :-)

I'll be selling my white one once I get the black one in hand and know it works. :-)

The selling price seems to be dropping on TM.
There have been quite a number going under $150

Just flashed ECOTOX v1.3.1 on my M001. Looks good!

I've created another thread to deal with that specific firmware update. I posted a pic there, too.

Could someone comment on the security aspect of using these devices. I've been keeping an eye on this tread and keen to have a go, my major concern is the security of these devices and android in general. Do these have traditional firewalls, virus, spam and trojen checking software or is it hit and miss.
How assured are you that if you wanted to do some internet banking or purchase something online using your credit card your transaction would be safe?

The Android security model is described here.

There are 3rd-party firewalls available if you think you need one. I haven't seen the need. No app can access the system by default...and even on a rooted phone the user would be asked/prompted by the "Superuser Permissions" app to allow or deny any specific request from an app for system-wide privileges. I default to deny unless I initiated the event that is doing the asking.

Spam? I use Gmail. I don't see any spam.....or so little (2-3 a month - maybe less - get to my Inbox?) I effectively see no spam.

Trojans? Back to the app security model again. They can't hurt you by default...and even on a rooted phone you'd have to give them permission to hurt you. Not aware of any android trojans so far. This is linux, so they would have limited ability to hurt anything.

Depending on the tablet / phone / Android version, you can look the screen with a PIN lock or a visible pattern touch lock. Or both on some devices. 3rd-party apps, like "Wave Secure", can give you the ability to wipe all data and brick your device remotely if you lose it or it's stolen.

The M001 supports visible pattern locks. I tend not to use them unless I'm using my device in an environment I'm not sure of.

The browser supports the usual encryption built into any good web browser. The password is in my head...and nowhere else.

I'd trust one of these things before I'd trust anything running Windows.....if I can put it that way.

The data security "hole" would be the sdcard. It's easily removable. Whatever is on there could disappear with the card of anyone got their hands on it. This boils down to physical security of the device. Like any laptop that got stolen, then had the hard drive connected up to a linux system and examined in detail without having to worry about an Windows security.

What are these tablets like for playing video media? eg does it support divx, xvid and mp4 formats and are there recommended settings for resolution, bit rate etc for successful playback.

Cheers

Steve
