Just flashed LeeDroid 1.8 only my A8183.
Radio 32.43.00.32U_5.09.00.20 flashed too (the previous one seemed to be working okay, but it was part of the instructions), and now signal seems to be worse. Im getting -105 to -107 dB where i usually got ~100

Does a Nandroid backup include the radio firmware? I assumed it did when I tried different ROMs and Radios a few months ago. What I did find is that everything needs to be checked out because there often seems to be something, whether it is GPS or WiFi or In-Call signal or Bluetooth etc that doesn't work in one combination but is fine in another. At least Nandroid allows the luxury of trying different options and being able to return to a baseline configuration.

I flashed my A8183 yesterday as well (what else does one do on a rainy afternoon?) and loaded this rom

This is a straight vanilla 2.2 ROM. Everything sems to be working and I have noticed that the Wifi signals are stronger as is the 3G signal I get at home - by 1 to 2 bars. The jury is still out in battery life. Great to be rid of the Telstra stuff.

I chose that ROM as frankly it seemed the least daunting. I had a look at the ROMs on XDA Developers but there was so many I wasn't sure where to start.

Exactly the same problem! And I thought I was the only one...
I'm on 2Degrees at the moment and the signal in my home's pretty bad with this new radio/ROM. I'm having problems maintaining a decent data connection as well because of the poor signal.

On the other hand, WiFi seems to be working great.

I am using Radio 32.43.00.32U_5.09.00.20 and the non-deodexed version. I have no idea what deodex is and on that Modaco thread when someone asked about it the reply was if you don't know you don't need it which was good enough for me.

The Radio was in the Zip I downloaded and Rom Manager installed it at the same time as Froyo. The ROM includes Sense and the HTC widgets and is pretty much the same apps/widget wise as the 2.1 version I had but without the Telstra stuff. GPS and WiFi work but I have not tried Bluetooth as I don't have anything to connect to it with. It seems much quicker and in particular I have noticed the applications list takes no time at all to load in "settings/applications/manage applications" whereas before it was quite laggy. "Manage applications" is laid out better now in my opinion too.

Thanks, although I couldn't control my curiosity any longer so I downloaded the ROM you mentioned and installed it's radio. Indeed, it's 32.43.00.32U_5.09.00.20 - The same I had earlier. Naturally, there was no change (improvement) in the network strength - it's varying from -95 dBm to even -113 dBm (That's 0 asu!!)

I tried a few other radios too:

32.26.00.24U_4.04.00.03_2 seemed a bit more stable with values ranging from -97 to -105.

32.36.00.28U_4.06.00.02_2 *appeared* to be the best, with it getting FULL strength (-83 dBm / 15 asu) and the lowest being -93 dBm. HOWEVER, there is a catch - these readings are EDGE! Moments later, it automagically jumped to HSDPA and the signal strength seems to have gone back to the 5.09.00.20 values. I do find it however marginally better than the old readings - for starters, it hasn't dropped to zero yet. (The lowest I saw it go to was 3 asu, when I held the phone in a particular position. I can't seem to reproduce the drop again though.)

So at the moment I'm on 4.06 but not sure if I should get back to 5.09 seeing that there's not much of a difference in HSDPA strengths. Most ROM chefs seem to recommend 5.09, but I'll continue testing both the radios.

Unfortunately I haven't done a Nandroid backup, so I can't get back to my original shipped radio. I don't even remember exactly which version it was, but I do know that the phone came from hong kong and according to xda-devs, the most likely match appears to be

RUU_Bravo_hTC_Asia_WWE_1.19.707.7_Radio_32.36.00.2 8U_4.06.00.02_2_release_126179_signed.exe

Does anyone here know for sure exactly which radio their device shipped with?

Update: With 3G turned off, I'm getting FULL signal strength: 17 asu / -79 dBm indoors! At the exact same spot, with 3G on, the signal immediately drops to half and sometimes even down to 2 asu! (Note that I'm still on the 4.06 radio)

I guess this isn't the first time I've noticed this behaviour - seen this with Vodafone on a WinMo too, same spot.
Can anyone else comment why this is happening? According to the 2degrees website, my home should be in the "broadband zone" so why the large difference in signal strengths between 2.5G and 3G?

EDIT: OK well I noticed that my GPS was not working very well at all. It was on but only picking up 1-3 satellites. I flashed this ROM instead:

and it seems to be all good now.

BTW ROM Manager/Nandroid backup is fantastic. I first went back to my old Telstra ROM and then re-flashed the first ROM I had. When it still didn't work I downloaded and flashed the new one. Took no time at all (superfast mirror).

Interestingly when I went back to the Telstra ROM the radio didn't change but GPS was working fine so it seems to have been an issue with the first 2.2 ROM I downloaded.

Hmmm, i tried to put a SIM Lock pin code on my sim card today, and it says:
Lock SIM card
2 retries left
SIM PIN

I tried picking a new code, but it said my PIN was wrong. This is strange, ive never put a lock code on my XT sim before, its a brand new one. When i turn my phone on i dont have to enter any kind of lock code etc.

I dont get it - how did my sim get a code which seems to exist but also not exist at the same time?

I think the default SIM code is 1234. Pretty sure they all come out with codes already set but not active.

After this update i have found an annoying issue with playback while listening with headphones i pause with the little control ( a shame no volume button) then i play again it sometimes rings the last phone numer i rang? i know the answer phone and play are on the sme button but it is annoying especially when i have the music app open

I did a manual check today (for the hundredth time) and finally got the update :)

Just a heads up to those still waiting on 2.2 and got their phone around the same time as me (~early June)
