has anyone rooted yet?
Is it safe to do so? I read a post saying that it might corrupt system files.
Wondering whether HTC has fixed this

Where did you read that it corrupts files?

Unlocking the bootloader to root will format the /data partition which removes a couple of apps which should've been in /system. But if you read the rooting guides you can back those up and restore them after you've rooted.

rooting is fine. htc dev unlock then root and put down a custom boot recovery at that point take a Nandroid backup. if you don't then never ever cry you can't revert. then pick the rom that you like the look of and lay it down. boot.img and the rom are flashed/loaded and you're done.
ARHD roms are clean and basicaly an improved version of what comes on the phone. really good if you want to improve on but not drift from the HTC One Sense 5 experience to far.

and you can always reload HTC Sense 5 stock and relock for OTA updates, or wait and always the developers incorporate the latest firmware versions into the builds.

heavenlywild: I finally picked my one up this afternoon from Noel Leeming after a wait of 1.5 months! Worth it considering I paid just $799.

Like most people here, I checked for gaps straight away at the store. Even the guy selling the phone told me that he's seen quite a few returns. So I am very lucky to have a good one!

Straight off the batt, the thing that's a stand out for me is the speaker, or speakers! I was taken aback when I watched a music video on YouTube. Wow!

The camera performs really well indoors at least. Crystal clear, and beats the 8MP cameras on the HTC One X and the Note 1.

I can confirm the XT version of the One which I ordered from Warehouse red alert has LTE enabled under network mode - GSM/WCDMA/LTE with a Vodafone sim card although I didn't pay the extra $10 to get LTE activated but would imagine it would work if I did (I am in Auckland).

From the outset, I was very keen on the HTC one, so I have been following this thread closely. However, now it's been out for a bit, I have decided not to buy. Don't get me wrong, it's a very nice piece of kit, however, these are the things that will keep me from handing over my cash ...

1. Battery. Not all batteries are the same, so the non-removable battery is a problem for me. I want a phone that I can easily swap out the battery if it starts to exhibit problems.

2. Build quality. Although not a major issue, but the build quality of the four handsets I have had a good look at has been indifferent on each, with varying degrees of gap and overhang. Every S4 I have looked at has been flawless.

3. HTC sense. I just don't like.

4. S4 "Nexus'. This week's announcement of a pure android S4 was the final nail in the coffin. I think I may wait for this.

Thanks mate. I am amazed that Telecom hasn't put any bloatware onto it - as reported by @brad earlier. This is how all phones should be.

But ya, you are right about the build quality. If those small gaps do put you off, fair enough.

I personally like this new Sense (not like I have used the old sense much). But it is quite polish and feels quite good.

The S4 nexus made me rethink my decision and I almost had the urge to sell the One. But then I thought, well actually, some of the features available in the normal S4 are quite nice to have (not saying that they are all needed!).

And ya, you are right about the battery as well. But I personally have never had the need to swap out my battery (I did have 2 batteries for a phone before). But almost never used the second battery and it was a waste.

The S4 does have a lot going for it. But buying either one of these phones wont make you regret your decision. They are probably going to be the top 2 phones this year (including the Google Phone X from Motorola and the iPhone 5s or whatever)

Yeah, I thought I would end up having the MyTelecom app on the phone but it is nowhere to be found, which is good.

This is the first Android HTC, last time I used HTC was back in the Windows Mobile days the HTC Diamond.

I have to say I miss the toggle buttons on the dropdown notification bar on the Galaxy, it was so easy to turn wifi, bluetooth, GPS on.

Mate, get the Widgetsiod widget off the Play Store. Does everything and more.

Glad to see people are enjoying Widgetsoid - brilliant app! As I mentioned here earlier I prefer it to the ones that manufacturers include, lets me choose what toggles I want in there. I particularly like being able to call my fiance directly from the notification shade, and I also love having the flashlight accessible from there.

Gee that was tough (not).
Walked into the local Noel Leemings, saw they had the XT One for $899. They also have 10% off phones this weekend so I asked if that applied to the 'One'. The girl initially said no because it was already a special, then in the next breath said if she could swing the 10% off would I take it (they only had 1). Yes, was the reply. So for $810, no fuss, no wait and the 'One' is charging as I write this. My cunning plan initially had me waiting until Queens Birthday but I figure the best would be the usual 20% off the RRP so 10 bucks seemed a pretty fair premium to walk out of the shop with one.
Checked it in the store, no obvious manufacturing defects, so as soon as it has sufficient charge I will install "Screen Test" from the Play Store to check for screen defects, check the radios all work and then start the hunt for a cover. 4G doesn't worry me at the moment as I only have a 500MB plan.
Initially I wondered why they had discounted it so quick, then realised that The Warehouse had a 'Red Alert' special at $899 earlier in the week, and of course they own NL now.
The only thing that is likely to cause me any trouble is how to explain to the other half about buying a new phone to replace my HOX (12 months old) when there is absolutely nothing wrong with it (except that it is 12 months old!).
