I am getting Orcon connected on Friday but have a concern about Outlook not working properly

I can receive Email okay through my Orcon Email account, but it will not send. Works fine through my IPhone both sending and receiving

The sales person said it should work fine, the tech help person on the phone said it is because I am not connected yet and an Email inquiry just resulted in the help files being sent to me despite saying I was an expert user and had been through online help including changing my ports and turning my firewall off.

Can anyone confirm that I just need to wait until I am properly connected, as that is no problem

Are you attempting to use Orcon's SMTP server to send from Outlook?

They probably block this from being used outside their network.

We limit our SMTP access to our netblocks only.

So it won't work until you are on the Orcon network.

Thanks

I guess my Iphone works because it is connecting in an manner more similar to webmail rather than SMTP

I was under the impression that the smtp server could be accessed from outside the Orcon network. I am certain that when I travel to Oz I could send and receive emails from mail,orcon.net.nz in the same way that I could while at home (ie Orcon-connected). However I have had to do a factory reset of my laptop some months ago and now find that my email client is running with default settings for the smtp server.

There used to be a support article on how to access Orcon's smtp server from outside the network (using a secure connection and a particular port). I cant find this article now. I just tried the settings from memory and they worked but I am currently on the Orcon network so this test is inconclusive until I try it from outside. It is possible that this is no longer supported but still works.

That's probably using SMTP auth with your orcon username, and possibly also on another port like 465 as opposed to 25.

With Orcon if you are not on their network (or even if you are) you can use:

SMTP Server: mail.orcon.net.nz
Port: 587
Use SMTP Authentication with the Orcon Username/Password

It will Work.

I have been using these settings for the last 13+ Years (Since I set it up @ Orcon)

Now on Orcon and Outlook is sending and receiving Emails in the proper way

Have to say the transition was the easiest I have had on any change of ISP

Now just need to work out how to create a second Email address for my wife as if it is possible the documentation is well hidden

Glad to hear it's going well so far! If you're after a second Orcon email address just give the team a call on 0800 13 14 15 and they can set one up for you (if you haven't sorted it already, sorry for the delay).
