Hi guys can ahyone help. I have recently purchased a Samsung 52 Series 8 TV and when I play the Blue Ray on it the disc flickers sometimes. It did not do this on my old sony 40" Have tried others disc sill the same, all is conected with HDMI Through Yamaha recevier, Any suggestions?

The first thing I would try is connecting the player directly to the TV, bypassing the amp. This will rule out that the amp is somehow causing the flicker.

Thanks tried that made no difference. It all worked OK through the Yamaha 3900 on the old sony TV only started when I set up new Samsung and thought maybe needed upgrade or something.

Maybe try turning off any of the signal processing that the samsung does?

Does it still flick if you drop the res (1080i or 720p) from the player?

Is all the firmware up to date on the appliances?

Can you easily take your blu-ray player and hdmi cable in to the retailer you got the TV from and try and plug it in to the same model TV set?

Just as an example of how finicky hdmi can be, my samsung player would do 1080p through a switch to my pana TV but produce the occasional tic. When I replaced the samsung with a pana player it refused to hand shake completely at 1080p through the switch.

How do I turn off signal processing? there is a firmwear available for the Blue Ray but it said that it will only enhance the blue ray live feature but I will upgrade it. Does not make any diff if 1080 or 720 Is it possible that the HDMI Cable could be faulty? I will try another one just in case

As you can see from my signature block I don't have a samsung TV but I was meaning things like picture noise reduction, sharpness etc. The hdmi cable is a good place to look. While I don't agree with paying $$$$ for some cables I have been burnt by buying budget ($15 for 1.5m) hdmi cables.

If you are getting the same glitch at lower data rates (1080i 720p) that would tend to indicate the transmission path. Does the hdmi plug engage properly in the socket? IMHO hdmi sockets don't appear all that robust.

From what I have been able to determine Samsung goods are technically excellent but have quite high levels of warranty returns so you will need to get on to the cause to make sure it's not the tellie.

hi what do you mean by flicker? just to confirm, you do not mean a jerky picture, you do mean that the screen goes off and on very quickly like disco lights? does it happen at a certain part of a show/movie or random?

Just had a thought...
Does it do it with any blu-ray disk, or one in particular? And is it random. And what about 24fps?

I get a little bit of flicker in some areas where there is a lot of light/dark lines close together which looks a little like interlacing issues (although obviously it's not interlacing), none of the TV's settings I've tried stops this but I've only got a 5-series, and it's a Chi-Mei panel at that. Rarely noticable, best example is the intro of Dark Knight during the city flyover and a building on the right with dark windows shimmers slightly.

if that helps, with my last tv there were scenes where there would be blue smeared everywhere when there are certain shades of blue in the scene. i was like ... hmm is that why it's called blu ray. at that time i didnt know if it was the ps3 or the tv, but hasnt happened since i bought a new tv.

not exactly what you're experiencing but i'd say pretty close. and i is probably the tv.

the other issue of flicker which is separate: it's called judder, or jerkiness. happens when playing at 24fps on large tvs (50" and above). it just can't be helped as this is due to laws of physics. was your previous tv non 24fps compatible?
to solve jerkiness some tvs allow higher frequency overscans eg scanning a 1080@24p feed at say 100Hz or even 200Hz (the new bravia X or something). but samsung disables higher frequency overscans when it detects 1080@24p feeds. so you'd have to do bd-player level manipulations if this is unbearable. i just live with it.

Thanks for the input guys, I tried a few things over the weekend and decided to bite the bullet and buy some 10.2 Monster HDMI cables, ultra high speed wow what a difference all problems solved and the sound is even better than before and that is saying something. Flicker gone all good.

Hope you didn't throw your money away on actual "Monster" branded cables? In most cases a $15 HDMI cable off TradeMe will perform identically to a $200 Monster cable.

Yes i did spend the money on the Monster brand cables, as this is what I am running. I have tried the cheaper ones and it was these that I have had poblems with, the cheaper ones are fine if you are not looking for the best result, just my opinion, but the monster ones are just better. Anyway it has been working fine now so all good.
