Hi guys -

Orcon's standard home and broadband packages aren't competitive any more, and I'm seriously thinking of moving to another provider - but here's a question for those who have moved off Orcon - Do you still keep your @orcon.net.nz email accounts?

Orcon do say the email addresses are "for life", but is that for as long as you're a customer, or regardless of that fact?

Thanks!

An ISP email address is always tied to an ISP. If you leave that ISP you're obviously going to have to maintain an account with them to keep that email address going.

Quite frankly there aren't many good reasons for using an ISP email address these days when there are so many other options that will give you an email address for life. You can pick up your own domain name for as little as ~$10 per year and have your own unique email address that you will always own and control.

I've had an Orcon email account for years now, and never paid 1c to them (Sorry Orcon!). Signed up in 2001 or 2002 for an email address for life, and never had any issues.

Great, thanks! Good to know that their email for life policy is (currently) exactly as it's made out to be.

It's true, your email address is free and continues to work after you leave.

I signed up several years ago then left, came back to them this year and the email address was reassigned to my account again. Actually when I signed back up with them technically I was an existing customer according to their system.

I had used the email on occasion even after I had left them, worked fine.

My primary email still uses orcon and I haven't been a customer for quite a few years now. Keep meaning to change it over to my domain email but just keep procrastinating.

Thanks for your replies everyone.

I think the confirmed concensus is that @orcon.net.nz emails do indeed persist beyond being a current orcon customer - which is great. Here's hoping it doesn't change without notice.

Hi there,

As you've probably gathered from the other replies, Orcon email addresses are indeed - free for life. Even if you don't have any internet services with us, your @orcon.net.nz email account will remain active for as long as you want it at no charge.

Hope that helps!

Cheers,

Cam
