Hello, I am wanting to setup a basic lab to study towards CCNA Voice, but am finding a lot of conflicting / confusing advice on the net.
Can someone please help me. I just dont want to spend hundreds and then realise I have made a mistake.

Someone else summarised what I need to get ready for the latest requirements of CCNA Voice 640-461. They said:

· The exam is based on new ISR G2 routers (2900 and 3900) but those are too expensive, so I recommend to get ISR 1 like a 2800 or 1861 or from 3800.
· you need IOS 15 for your router.
·1 AIM-CUE-1GB (Voice Mail Module) for router (goes inside so match the model of your router)
·CME 8 as the exam is based on v.8, which requires IOS 15.

I have checked out Trademe but there are no 2800, 1861 or 3800 routers with IOS 15.
Basically I need a but of guidance from someone in the know regarding points such as:
- the feasibility of buying a suitable router and upgrading to IOS 15
- the cost involved of that and getting CME 8 etc.
- what my total outlay will need to be roughly.
- etc.

Even though I have CCNA I dont have any industry experience so am a newbie with hardware setups.
Or is there someone out there who has just passed 640-461 with a home lab setup that can tell me exactly the gear they used ?

Thanks kindly for any help.

I could use GNS3 to an extent, but I would prefer to set up a basic home lab using actual equipment.

All the 2800 series can run IOS 15 - if they don't have it on Trade Me you can upgrade it once you have the router

thanks, yes I now know that a 2800 series router with IOS 15 and CME 8 is required.
But, how does the licensing work ? I mean if I buy a router on Trademe running IOS 12 and then I want to upgrade it to 15, do I have to purchase a license, which I imagine would be quite expensive ?
Does anyone have experience with this ?

Thanks kindly.

If you want to do CCNA voice, you don't need to buy external routers, and if you want to study CUCM 8 than you can use vmware on your high performance PC, you can also use GNS (dynamips) to assign routers (simulator) or during Call Manager you will required NTP server that also you can archive using GNS or vmware or by online.

regarding cisco ISO, that you can archive by using GNS/dynamips and you can use multiple routers without any cost. for router practice you can use Packet Tracer, its good for practice.

Use GNS as a router and vmware as Call Manager. hope its help.. happy labbing.

I have been using Cisco Packet Tracer5.3.0  for my training, it covers all you need for CCNA. Old version of that simulator did not support VoIP, but this version does. It has router 2811 so you dont have to buy the real thing.
