Bought my daughter an iPad 2 for Christmas, which has been working fine, except for trying to get her off it to communicate with real people occasionally. Until tonight. She was using it when I got home from work, even showed me some of the stuff she was doing, and it was all good. Then suddenly: "What the ...?!" and she shows me again... Now, I'm no Apple expert, so I'll use Windows terminology: It's like the screen "background colour" has changed from black to red. The red bleeds through into any other colour on the screen. For example, she has a photograph set as her "desktop wallpaper" and it's all tinged bright red. Highlighted text (e.g. selected items under Settings) show as horizontal blue and red stripes. We tried turning the iPad off, and when we switched it back on, even the power-up screen (with the Apple logo on) is bright red. Anybody seen or heard about this before? Can it be "reset", or does it need to go back to the shop for replacement?

You could try resetting the iPad by holding down the home button and the power button at the same time, and keep holding until the Apple logo appears. David.

Sounds like the LCD or the controller chip is borked. Either way, it's back to the repair centre. Just as well it's still under warranty as repair could be expensive.

If still within warranty, just take it to the retainer where you bought it, they would submit a repair job and sent the faulty iPad to Apple; you will get one replacement within a week.

OK, so let me tell you how this played out. While I was looking for the receipt so I could take it back to Noel Leemings, my wife was looking on Google. She found a bunch of people have had this same problem, usually after dropping the iPad, and the fix is to... smack it on the backside. Yep, I know. Sounds dodgy. Sounds like something that would void your warranty. But she did it anyway. Put it face down on a flat, but soft-ish surface (a several-times-folded towel on the floor) and smacked it on the back with an open hand. Firmly, but not dent-the-aluminium hard. Turned it over - no change. Turned it back and whacked it again, slightly harder. Turned it over - no change. Tried it again, and again. The fourth time - bugger me - it's like new. Been running fine now for a couple of weeks - no problems with the display, or anything else. Make of that what you will...

But wouldn't doing that void it's warranty, as don't they have some form of impact detector in them? Personally if it was under warranty, and I hadn't dropped it, I would have just returned it, rather than trying that.The fear is that it will occur again the in the future, and if it did occur again, it will likely be out of warranty next time.

I don't personally own or use any Apple products, other than a five or six year old iPod, but if the iPad has an impact detector in it, I suspect that it would have triggered already. Even though it's kept in a hard cover, I'm pretty sure it's been dropped already.
