How to configure ActiveSync via Bluetooth on your Toshiba E750
Posted on 30-Aug-2003 17:18 | Tags Filed under: Articles

In this article we show how to configure and use your desktop or notebook for Activesync with your Toshiba E750Pocket PC with Windows Mobile 2003.

For this we used a desktop running Windows 2000 Pro with a TDK USB Bluetooth (version 1.4.2.1) as a server. The client is a Toshiba E750 Pocket PC running Windows Mobile 2003.

Check out other Geekzone Bluetooth Guides for more step-by-step pages!

This guide is based on Windows 2000 machines. The dialogs for Windows XP might be a little different, but the configuration will be the same.

Please note that current software implementation will not allow you to have an "automatic" Activesync. Devices will not start the sync operation when they're close to each other - the user has to initiate it.

First, the configuration in your desktop or notebook. Start by right-clicking the Bluetooth icon in the System Tray and selecting Advanced configuration.

Now select the Local Service tab and take note of what COM port corresponds to the Bluetooth Serial Port.

Right-click the ActiveSync icon in the Sytem Tray and select Connection Settings.

Make sure you check the box "Allow Serial cable or infrared connection to this COM port" and select the COM port corresponding to the Bluetooth Serial Port in the service configuration we found just before. Click the OK button when finished.

Right-click the ActiveSync icon again and select the Open Microsoft ActiveSync option.

Select the Options button...

Here you select the schedule as "Continuous" or "Upon connection".

Now, for your Toshiba E750 configuration. Make sure the Bluetooth stack is active. The switch at the bottom of the device must be in the On position. From the Today screen tap the wireless icon in the bottom right.

From the Bluetooth Settings program, tap the Search icon (the magnifier glass in the bottom).

When the server is found you can tap and hold on the corresponding icon, to show the menu. You'll select Update Service.

Now the list of services offered by the desktop or laptop is shown.

Tap and hold the Serial Port service until you see the menu. Select ActiveSync Registration.

If you haven't paired the devices yet, the following dialog will ask for a PIN. Enter any PIN you like here.

On the desktop or laptop a notification bubble will show up, asking for PIN confirmation. Click on the Bluetooth icon on your System tray.

On this dialog you can enter the same PIN entered on your Toshiba E750 before. This will create a pairing between those two devices.

You'll see a warning. Tap the OK button to continue. ActiveSync will connect.

To finish ActiveSync or disconnect at anytime, navigate your way back to the list, tap and hold the Serial Port service until you see the menu. Select ActiveSync Release.
