Geekzone Needs To Move Servers - Anyone Interested?
Posted on 2-Sep-2005 09:51 by M Freitas | Tags Filed under: Blog

It looks like we have now got the stage where our current hosting plan is not suitable for the amount of traffic Geekzone generates and we have to plan the move to our own servers on a hosted environment.

Our current hosting provider (Intellihost) is part of Iconz. They are based in Auckland and have a robust platform and good support. Even though Intellihost itself doesn't offer 24x7 support, I found that calling the Iconz support directly in an emergency case always resulted in the required actions being performed.

No, the problem is not with their service - it is just the Geekzone has been a huge success (thank you!) and in terms of web traffic and database access it can actually generate a sizeable load on the current shared servers.

So, I've got a phone call asking if I would consider moving the domain to my own server on a hosted environment. It will cost a little bit more now, but in the long run I understand is a good option for us and for Intellihost - we can't impact on their overall operation.

But I would like to hear from other hosting providers - either here in New Zealand or in the USA. And if you have any experiences, I also want to hear from you. Just post in the comments below or use our contact page.

It also means I am looking for more advertisers interested in showing their brands and products on Geekzone. Contact me if you are interested on this too!

I am considering Iconz as the frontrunner for this, because of their good history and relationship. But any good proposal is worth reading.

And, by the way, no need to tell me about Rackspace. I talked to them over the live web support a few months ago, and I am still waiting for their phone call to confirm some information...

Updates: Thanks for all your responses. I did get some contacts from New Zealand, US and UK based companies. And to Rackspace's credit they have contacted me too. since then.
