It appears that Telecom will announce a change of plans and cover the nation with 850MHz WCDMA/HSDPA...

The rumours are that an announcement is coming tomorrow, 8th August.

Sweet. I think? This stuff still confuses me though, so I registered to this site just to ask the following.

Does someone want to quickly explain the gst of this..

1 - What did kind of network did Telecom first announce, and how does this differ?

2 - What Advantages/Disadvantages does this give Telecom to Voda?

3 - What are the I-phone, and new handset ramifications?

Welcome to Geekzone. And this is a cool user name...

Vodafone is deploying a 900 MHz WCDMA network, which is not common around the world. Telecom's plans to deploy a 850 MHz WCDMA network is good because this is used by Telstra in Australia, automatically giving Telecom the largest roaming partner over there.

Also 850 MHz is a common band used in the US, meaning many of the handsets bought there will work here easily.

The only question remaining is the timeframe. Telecom was planning to initially release GSM/EDGE in rural areas and 2100MHz WCDMA in the cities. We will find out more when they make the official announcement. Stay there, keep an eye on Geekzone.

Ok, thanks for that quick reply.After 5 mins of research. I think my original questions should have been the following:1. What’s the difference between - 850GSM/ GPRS Edge and 850 WCDMA/HSDPA?? Telecom announced it was going 850 ages ago, I'm just trying to get my head around how this latest announcement of 850 will change things.2. How does the I-Phone run better on 850 over 900?

GPRS and EDGE are called 2.5G mobile data networks and offer much slower speeds than WCDMA/HSDPA.

There isn't an iPhone 3G 900 MHz - yet, but there are rumours.

Hmm, I'm wondering....

900 Mhz WCDMA - Coming along, not very common and not too fast in deployment worldwide
850Mhz WCDMA - Coming along, more common esp in US...

2100Mhz WCDMA - Most common now in Asia and Europe..... But what about its development????

No more information in their call, except this bit:

“Revenue from IT services for the quarter grew nearly 20% when compared to the same period last year and the build of our new WCDMA mobile network is also progressing apace. We are evaluating the further potential of WCDMA at 850 MHz.”

Telecom really have no choice but the good thing is when they do it they will have a huge egde and their are a whole lot more 850MHZ UMTS handsets now and very few 900MHZ, both technologies will grow rapidly though. Certainly Telecom will have a real option to migrate customers quickly off CDMA to free up spectrum and capacity.

As interesting as this is lets just remember its not guarenteed yet.......As carefully statd by Dr Reynolds in todays Media presentation:

"Regardless of the final technology choices, our priority is to ensure a great customer experience at launch. In November 2008, we will be able to accept inbound roamers on our network in Auckland and we’ll also begin a pilot. We then expect to launch the new mobile network later in the financial year.”

Which also highlights a second sad point....maybe the new network will not be our savior until 'later on in the financial year'
