EDIT: Thanks freitasm, should have known better

Heres the important parts of the announcment:

“The new mobile network provides a massive opportunity for us, and we’re determined to get it right.  Firstly we want the customer experience to be optimal – in regards to coverage and services.  Secondly we want to ensure we robustly investigate the opportunity that WCDMA 850MHz presents” says Paul.

“Regardless of the final technology choices, our priority is to ensure a great customer experience at launch.  In November 2008, we will be able to accept inbound roamers on our network in Auckland and we’ll also begin a pilot.  We then expect to launch the new mobile network later in the financial year.”

“We’re totally committed to getting it right first time for customers, so we won’t move our customers onto the new mobile network until we’ve completed the pilot, and we’re confident it will deliver the experience we want.”

There are already 24 networks globally with WCDMA at 850MHz including Telstra in Australia, and AT&T in the USA.

Please read this. Someone already lost his job a few years ago for distributing internal material outside the company.

Any idea who the equipment supplier is likely to be? I imagine the incumbent supplier Alcatel Lucent is keen to get a piece of this pie. Ericsson must also be in the running..........anyone know?

Alcatel Lucent probably as they are already well into the $300 million that has already put aside.

The question is what will happen to the GSM network already underway.

Low capacity to limit its effects on the WCDMA network?

Thats a good question, I would think it is going to be shut down and completely replaced.

I'd be surprised if TNZ have enough frequecy to allow CDMA, GSM and WCDMA at 850Mhz, there would be massive interference problems like they had in Australia.

Wonder what the Alcatel Lucent refund policy of a slightly used basestation is?

What does it mean by "inbound roamers" being able to connect in Auckland?

I think it means they are going to be late in releasing the network for local users.

It's in Telecom's interests to have a GSM network. Think inbound roaming revenue.

hmmm, spectural efficiency may a be a problem as has been stated already. I really hope they keep the 850MHZ GSM network and flag EDGE.

They could motivate change to WCDMA buy spending huge money on an upgrade campaign paying for car kit changes and handset upgrades.

I AM EXCITED as some one with a financial interest,  but also concerned with what the next 6 months will bring.

Rural broadband is going to take of big time

I guess  Telecom hasn't paid them enough money yet.

"The architects of the transatlantic merger that created telecoms giant Alcatel-Lucent have resigned 20 months after the merger.

It reported three-month losses of 1.1bn euros ($1.7bn; £866m) and warned sales would not improve in this quarter."
