bitserf: So is Vodafone going to be allowing us to pre-order, sign up or make a commitment of some sort?

I sure as hell am not going to queue until midnight like the rest of the Steve worshiping sheep...And this whole having to go to a store deal...I want to go there, pick it up, and be done with it, not go there, on the possibility of something maybe being there, maybe not, who knows.

What's the point of registering if its an information relay of stuff that's already in a press release anyway?

Bitserf, many thanks for sharing the thoughts and assumptions of your mind. Im amazed that your asking questions that just wont be answered until "all is revealed". Im sure the PR Machine @ vodafone love your emotional responses and have "won" you with how they are launching and creating hype/chatter.

Nobody is asking you to go there at midnight, the point of registering for info is so they can forcast demand and interest. This in turn transpires into 'word of mouth' to people who you talk to, thus the hype just gets bigger and bigger...interest in the product sores and wammo..... sales sales sales.

After all, in the business of selling.... all any company wants to do is sell more. Patience is a virtue and if you really want it, you will get it.

Spare me the half-baked error laden nuggets of wisdom, I'm aware of how marketing and building expectation works.

Given that Vodafone employees have posted here before, it's not unreasonable to expect that more information than the content-free communications from Vodafone may be available.

And perhaps I have other reasons for wanting to obtain one in a reasonable time frame, such as, doing real testing of applications that I've put together with the SDK? Eh?

Do you really expect someone to let the cat out of the bag? I suspect the people you refer to giving you answers are bottom of the chain retail sales clerks who dont have to abide by a non disclosure as they will get the info at the same time as you. (well maybey a day before), but whos that worried anyhow.

I'd say that 22 pages of this thread shows that there's more than just a few of us who are keen to find out some info as soon as possible, and discuss the potential plans and pricing.

The Australian plans haven't filled me with much confidence that Vodafone are going to blow us away with their new plans. But I'm trying to remain hopeful.

I'm really curious as to how the iPhone plans will be considering Vodafone NZ do not have WiFi Hotspots to bundle with their plans, unlike mobile carriers worldwide....

Yeah - the saving grace of a crappy data plan, is giving free WiFi at nationwide hotspots. But unless Vodafone have struck a quiet deal with some of the WiFi providers I doubt they can offer anything. Cafenet costs $80 for 350MB so no way we'd see "free, unlimited WiFi" from their hotspots.

But Tomizone have launched a new promo giving away 500MB or 3 months data (which ever comes first) for free on their hotspots for iPhone of iPod Touch owners. So that's a small consolation at least: http://www.tomizone.com/promo

They can bundle quite a lot of things, like BestMates, Family, etc, and also have home phone / broadband / 3G broadband bundle packs to lure more in...

Vodafone better not have a 100MB plan...

Don't take this the wrong way, but I'd like to know how you would use 5GB in a month on an iPhone. I'm willing to be proved wrong on this, but I think it will be hard to use more than 1GB in a month. Probably more if you include WiFi, but on just the 3G connection, I doubt it.

Well, you could download a couple of albums from the iTunes Music Store, and that would swallow quite a few hundred megs of data.

But I've personally not used over 2GB on a mobile broadband connection, thanks in part to the patchy 3G coverage in my area.

On the current iPhone, you can only download albums over WiFi - not sure if it's changing for the iPhone 3G??

I did know of the application download limit for apps in App Store to be downloaded over 3G, otherwise App Store will prompt for a Wi-Fi connection.

There are so many possibilities with the iPhone for data usage that I can't possibly list them all. Even just background apps, like Mail or any other app using the application update portal thing, will use up some usage (especially Mail, with the multitude of Geekzone forum update emails, and the plentiful HTML emails that I get nowadays).

All I'm hoping is for a high usage plan at a reasonable cost comparable to the current 3G broadband plans.

All I really want is the phone. Id rather have it on some plan with low data caps. I mean, the 3g network can't even hold a candle to full speed ADSL.

Computer's are for browsing the internet.
Phone's are for calling.
IPhone's are for looking aesthetically nice in your pocket and/or hands. And for also making your misinformed friends jealous.

Incorrect speling should be punnished!!!

1GB would probably be plenty for the majority of people and I think we will be lucky to get even that in NZ.

The iPhone is only good for checking emails and light web surfing. Sure it can render a full page but its not a very enjoyable experience scrolling / pinching the screen becomes annoying quickly. Pages also take a lot longer to render / display on an iphone using wifi. Probably a by product of a slow embedded processory with limited memory. Better just to jump on your desktop to surf the web.

Its still a great device but I think people need to be realistic about how much data they are going to use. For me its mostly RSS news feeds (i recommend google reader) and emails - and only when a real computer is not at hand.
