Hi - obviously I am still doing something wrong in that I cannot connect to the internet using PIE.

Here is my status:

I have the dongle connected to my laptop that has a wifi connection to my dsl router. The router has 192.168.1.1, the laptop has 192.168.1.5 (with the connection shared), with the Bluetooth connection having 192.168.0.1. The default gateway on the Bluetooth connection is set to 192.168.1.1. I am running XP Pro.

The Pocket PC itself tells me it is connected - of sorts. It has the double arrows on the device ison for my laptop. If I select Actions under Device Information it tells me I am connected to the network (well it says Disconnect from network Access meaning I must be connected) It also tells me my device is bonded. If I try the AvantGo connect under Settings/Connections it says Error 5453 - Cannot find server or there was a dns error. It does not say Connected for Network Access - rather Services Retrieved are in Actions Menu.

Under connections I am modifying Work Settings, Proxy Settings to say This network connects to the Internet but this setting never stays... The last setting for my network card is set to The Internet.

Under Network Adapters I have three entries - it is unclear why I should use (AsyncMac1 or NE2000 or PPTP1) For some reason if I select any of them and click on properties nothing happens either. I think it may have done at some stage.

I cannot perform a Bluetooth Active Sync either - it just hangs at the Connecting to Host stage.

First, to make sure you're connected and working find, download VxUtil and try doing a PING to a host you know - start with your computer (IP) and then try www.wired.com.

If you do not get a reply, next question is do you have a personal firewall running? Turn it off and try again. It may be blocking localhost communications, needed by ICS.

If you get reply from your computer and www.wired.com translates into an IP address, then the problem is with PIE: there are a couple of configuration files in the root folder that some people delete during cleanups. To fix this, run the welcome.exe from the Windows folder in your Pocket PC, reset and try again.

ActiveSync is another story: you need to configure AS to accept incoming Serial connections in the COM port defined as CLIENT in your Bluetooth configuration.

For people that don't know DSE, they're a chain of electronics store in Australia and New Zealand. They're selling and branding BT products made in Taiwan. The stack is widcomm.

OK - had another crack at this.

Setup of Ipaq 3970 & Dickie Smithie Bluetooth dongle (on XP Pro)

Pocket PC

I connect to the network on my Pocket PC – i.e. by selecting Network Access and it says I am connected. (and I get the connected symbol for my PC under the Bluetooth Mgr)

That’s the good bit……

However I cannot access the internet or even browse files on the PCs also on the network – If I try to connect via PIE or MS Messenger it says ‘unable to connect with current settings.’

However I am confused about the settings the connections should use on the Pocket PC. (It shouldn’t be dial up I would have thought.)

The three settings for the connections are:

1. Connect to the Internet – Work Settings

Under Proxy Settings I have ticked ‘This network connects to the internet’ but not that it uses a proxy server.

I have set no Modem connections as I would have thought we weren’t dialing out as such.

2. Automatically connect to Work

I have no settings under Modem, under VPN I have I have a connection set up with the IP address 192.168.0.1 with Name Servers. I have ticked Software Compression and Use IP Header Compression.

Under Proxy Settings, I have the same as 1.

3. I have set my network card to ‘Work’.

PC End

Network connections:

The IP addresses for the network connections below are (in order):

192.168.1.11
Nothing
192.168.0.1
192.168.1.5
The gateway (dsl router) is 192.168.1.1

Bluetooth setting (for Network Access):

>> This was a simplified dialog box not like the one previously posted

This is the only option I have if I double click ‘Network Access’ – I think you refer to more – the version of widcomm is as follows:

>> The version showing is 1.2.2.15

So I am a bit confused I guess.

Sync over Bluetooth
The other problem I have had is with syncing over Bluetooth – I have the com port set up correctly (as stated in Local Services – Bluetooth Serial Port) but on my Pocket PC when I attempt to run it it starts the connection and has a status of ‘Connecting to Host’ but just hangs there. I have set the com value correctly in the Sync set up,

Other things:

My device is bonded, have set the active sync partner etc. I can send files successfully to my PC via Bluetooth.

Any suggestions you have would be welcome!

(BTW the screen dumps got dropped from this and it doesnt seem possible to attach these - but they are available) I also got vxutil and the pings don't work - either to my PC or on the internet.

marka, this is the problem you're facing - your configuration is wrong.

To connect to LAN Access using Bluetooth (iPAQ and DSE), you're not required to change any setting in the Connection configuration - there's nothing there for Bluetooth LAN at all.

Next, if you have the devices paired, make sure you follow:

this guide on how to configure the Bluetooth in both the desktop and H3970

this guide on how to find and fix problems in your connection.

Make sure you follow the guides step-by-step, not overlooking anything as explained there. If you do, and you should be able to connect.

Very interesting...... On my other PC I ran the setup tonight and all was working straight away. As you say, basically nothing on the Pocket PC - I could get all services going - PIE, TS, etc no trouble. Very nice.......

There must be something wrong with my other machine - I have tried a connection using wifi and also a LAN cable, but even to get to the local machine although it says it is connected, I cannot search for files etc. using my Pocket PC.

If I select say a shared drive on the PC using File Explorer on the Pocket PC, it says that the network resource is not available or I am not authorised to acces the network. Shortly thereafter my internet connection on my PC goes on the fritz, until I disable the Bluetooth network connection - then the internet springs back in to life. The settings look exactly the same on both machines (i.e. the one that works and the one that doesnt) - something is weird and appears as though it is causing some conflict or something. Also, if I disable my internet connection, the bluetooth connection can still not see the shared drive on the local PC.

The one that works is running XP Home, the one that doesnt is running XP Pro but I dont see that should make a difference......

In another thread a user complained about the internet connection being interrupted until the Bluetooth connection was dropped. The problem was Zone Alarm.

Are you running a Personal Firewall in this box?

OK - after all that...... indeed it appears to be the firewall - now works fine on both my computers - I can just swap the dongle between them (if I need to)
Kind of neat re the radio as you say, also www.windowsmedia.com et al.

Thanks for your help. Glad I persisted with this and now have a better understanding of how the bits fit togther.
